What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Usability Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Usability Intern, you need a foundational understanding of user experience (UX) principles, basic research methods, and relevant coursework or a degree in human-computer interaction, design, or a related field. Familiarity with usability testing tools, wireframing software (like Figma or Sketch), and data analysis platforms is often expected. Strong communication, attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset help you effectively gather feedback and work with cross-functional teams. These skills are essential for identifying user pain points and contributing to the creation of user-friendly digital products.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Usability Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Usability Intern, you can expect to participate in a variety of hands-on projects that typically include assisting with user research, conducting usability testing sessions, analyzing user feedback, and helping create reports on usability findings. You may also collaborate closely with UX designers, product managers, and developers to suggest improvements based on user insights. This role often involves preparing test materials, observing user interactions, and contributing ideas to enhance product usability. Working in this position provides valuable exposure to different stages of the user-centered design process and offers opportunities to learn from experienced professionals in a collaborative environment.

What does a Usability Intern do?

A Usability Intern assists in evaluating and improving the user experience of products, websites, or applications. They typically conduct usability tests, collect and analyze user feedback, and help identify areas for design improvement. Their work supports the design team by providing insights into how real users interact with products, making them more intuitive and user-friendly. Usability Interns often work closely with UX designers, researchers, and developers to ensure design solutions effectively meet user needs.

ODK Media

Job description

Company Overview:
ODK Media, Inc. is a media company headquartered in Irvine, California with an office in Los Angeles, CA as well. We provide premium international content through our owned-and-operated streaming platforms, including OnDemandKorea, OnDemandChina, and OnDemandViet.
We also distribute content through global streaming services, cable operators, and movie theaters, serving as a leading Asian media hub for AAPI communities throughout the United States.
Position Overview:
Learn how a streaming product is quality-tested end to end at ODK Media (OnDemandKorea • Amasian TV) - functional QA across a real device matrix, design QA against Figma specs, and usability testing with real users. Two named mentors (a Product Manager and our Design/QA lead), weekly 1:1s, a defined 12-week curriculum, and hands-on use of AI-assisted QA tooling.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Execute guided test passes on release candidates across web, mobile, and TV platforms (Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Samsung/LG smart TVs)
  • Write bug reports in Jira to our standard: reproduction steps, expected vs. actual, severity per rubric, screen recordings - specced well enough that engineers (and AI agents) can act without follow-up questions
  • Run regression checklists for scheduled releases and verify fixed issues
  • Design QA: compare shipped screens against Figma specs and log discrepancies
  • Test subtitles/captions and accessibility across devices, including compliance scenarios and TV remote navigation
  • Support usability sessions: task design, note-taking, synthesis into short findings reports
  • Join weekly triage to see how issues get prioritized

Requirements
  • Currently enrolled student (junior/senior or graduate) in HCI, CS, Design, Communications, Media, or related - able to receive academic credit preferred
  • Detail-oriented: you notice the misaligned button, the subtitle that flashes one frame late
  • Clear written communication - most of this work is writing things other people act on
  • Comfortable learning Jira and Figma (we teach our workflow)
  • Korean/English bilingual a plus (Vietnamese or Chinese also welcome); interest in streaming/K-content a plus
  • Nice to have: beta-testing or bug-bounty experience, research-methods coursework, familiarity with TV streaming devices

Benefits
PERKS & BENEFITS
  • Catered lunch every day with varying local cuisines and a kitchen stocked with drinks and snacks
  • Corporate parties, team bonding events, and much more!
