How much do urgently hiring oil rig helicopter pilot jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 23, 2026, the average yearly pay for urgently hiring oil rig helicopter pilot in the United States is $100,249.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $90,000.00 and $112,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does an oil rig helicopter pilot do?

An oil rig helicopter pilot is responsible for safely transporting personnel, equipment, and sometimes supplies between offshore oil rigs and onshore bases or other platforms. They operate helicopters in challenging environments, often dealing with variable weather and sea conditions. Pilots need to adhere to strict safety protocols, conduct pre-flight inspections, and ensure all cargo and passengers are secure. In addition to flying duties, they may also be involved in emergency response and search-and-rescue operations. This role requires specialized training, certification, and experience in offshore and maritime aviation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an oil rig helicopter pilot?

To thrive as an Oil Rig Helicopter Pilot, you need a commercial helicopter pilot license, significant flight hours (often 1,000+), and specialized offshore and instrument flight training. Familiarity with advanced navigation systems, offshore survival certifications (like HUET), and experience with aircraft such as the Sikorsky S-92 or AW139 are typically required. Exceptional situational awareness, decision-making skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure set top pilots apart. These competencies are critical for ensuring passenger safety and reliable operations in challenging and unpredictable offshore environments.

What are the main challenges faced by oil rig helicopter pilots during daily operations?

Oil rig helicopter pilots often contend with rapidly changing weather conditions, limited visibility, and the need for precise landings on confined helipads at sea. The role demands strict adherence to safety protocols and close coordination with ground and rig crews to ensure secure passenger and cargo transfers. Pilots should be prepared for irregular schedules, including early mornings and overnight shifts, as flight times depend on rig operations and emergency needs.
