Uranium, NORM & Radiological-Risk Specialist — GCM-2

Location: Remote — anchored to Oak Ridge, Tennessee
Engagement: Contingent consulting/project-based assignment
Anticipated compensation: $150–$300 per hour or a negotiated fixed price for a defined work package

Position Summary

Axyde Analytics is assembling a multidisciplinary expert cadre for a time-sensitive proposal to the U.S. Trade and Development Agency. If Axyde receives the award, USTDA may request support evaluating prospective international mining, mineral-processing, refining, infrastructure and critical-mineral supply-chain projects.

For GCM-2, Axyde is seeking a senior specialist with substantial, directly evidenced experience addressing radiological risk in mining, mineral processing or related industrial operations, particularly:

  • Uranium and thorium

  • Naturally occurring radioactive material

  • Technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive material

  • Radiation protection and exposure control

  • Radioactive residues, tailings and process streams

  • Nuclear-material safeguards and regulatory considerations

This is a deliberately narrow technical requirement. The specialist may work within broader mining, processing, environmental and regulatory teams, but selection for GCM-2 will be based primarily on demonstrated depth in radiological and nuclear-mineral risk.

This is not a general environmental, health and safety, industrial-hygiene, hazardous-materials or mining position. General EHS experience will not substitute for directly relevant radiological experience.

Potential Responsibilities

Depending on the assignment, the specialist may:

  • Identify uranium, thorium, NORM or TENORM risks associated with mineral deposits, concentrates, process streams, residues, tailings and products.

  • Evaluate radiological implications of rare-earth, heavy-mineral-sands, phosphate, uranium or polymetallic projects.

  • Review radiation-survey, dose-assessment, sampling, laboratory and monitoring information.

  • Evaluate occupational and public-exposure pathways, including inhalation, ingestion, direct radiation and environmental transport.

  • Assess radiation-protection programs, monitoring plans, engineering controls, administrative controls and personal protective measures.

  • Review radioactive-material handling, storage, transportation, residue management and disposal assumptions.

  • Evaluate tailings and waste-management approaches involving radioactive constituents.

  • Identify host-country regulatory, permitting, licensing, safeguards and institutional-capacity requirements.

  • Compare proposed practices with applicable U.S. and internationally recognized radiological-protection principles.

  • Review project assumptions involving uranium or thorium recovery as a primary product, coproduct, byproduct or regulated waste constituent.

  • Identify data gaps, testing requirements, regulatory uncertainties and conditions for responsible project advancement.

  • Contribute to scopes of work, terms of reference, budgets, schedules, monitoring plans and technical-risk registers.

  • Prepare or independently review concise, decision-grade technical findings and recommendations.

  • Participate in remote meetings, stakeholder discussions and international site visits when required.

Required Specialized Experience

Applicants must demonstrate meaningful experience in one or more of the following:

  • Uranium exploration, mining, processing, recovery or remediation.

  • Thorium-bearing mineral systems.

  • NORM or TENORM evaluation and management.

  • Radiological characterization of ores, concentrates, residues, tailings or industrial process streams.

  • Radiation protection, health physics or dose assessment.

  • Radiological sampling, monitoring, laboratory analysis or data validation.

  • Radioactive waste, residue or tailings management.

  • Rare-earth or heavy-mineral processing involving uranium or thorium coproducts.

  • Nuclear-material safeguards, accountability, licensing or regulatory compliance.

  • Radiological environmental assessment, remediation or closure planning.

Applicants must distinguish their personal technical contributions from the work performed by the broader project or organization.

Résumé Evidence Required

  • At least two directly relevant radiological, uranium, thorium, NORM or TENORM projects.

  • The minerals, materials, facilities or process streams involved.

  • The radiological hazards or regulatory issues evaluated.

  • The applicant’s personal role and technical responsibility.

  • The specific surveys, models, assessments, controls, designs or reviews performed.

  • The applicable project scale and operating environment.

  • Technical reports, permits, safety analyses, monitoring plans or recommendations personally produced.

  • Measurable outcomes, regulatory decisions or risk reductions, where available.

A résumé that merely lists environmental compliance, industrial hygiene, hazardous materials, mining safety or nuclear-sector proximity without demonstrating substantive radiological responsibility will not be advanced.

Breadth is not rewarded for GCM-2 unless the required radiological or nuclear-mineral depth is first established.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, radiological science, environmental engineering, mining engineering, geochemistry or a closely related discipline.

  • Certified Health Physicist, Professional Engineer or comparable professional credential.

  • Experience with uranium, rare-earth, phosphate or heavy-mineral-sands projects.

  • Familiarity with U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, International Atomic Energy Agency or comparable host-country requirements.

  • Experience evaluating projects in emerging markets or jurisdictions with developing regulatory institutions.

  • Experience preparing independent technical reviews, feasibility-study inputs, environmental assessments or lender/investor due diligence.

  • Experience preparing English-language reports for government, financial or executive decision-makers.

Eligibility and Availability

Applicants must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or a non-U.S. citizen lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States.

  • Be potentially available to begin supporting an authorized assignment within approximately 20 days, subject to final scheduling.

  • Be willing and able to travel internationally when an assignment requires it.

  • Identify any country, customer, travel, employment, security, export-control or conflict-of-interest restrictions.

  • Be able to perform without using or disclosing classified information or proprietary information belonging to another employer or client.

  • Authorize Axyde to tailor and reformat the submitted résumé without materially changing the applicant’s qualifications.

A current or former security clearance may be relevant to certain experience but is not required unless a future assignment expressly states otherwise.
