Your role at a glance
The Data Center Technician Apprentice is an entry level position that will work closely with Data Center Technicians to further develop and enhance their knowledge base & skills set. This position will assist in ensuring the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of the data center electrical, mechanical, plumbing, control and fire life safety systems is maintained.
This position will also be responsible to carry out the duties and the processes that maximize customer uptime in the most cost-effective way. The Data Center Apprentice is expected to learn to recognize data center problems and support proper escalation, and if possible timely repairs, and to provide oversight of contractors to deliver quality services, and that internal customer demands are met. The Data Center Technician Apprentice will develop their skills with hands on work, computer based and other training, performing requested tasks, assisting in building rounds and in the conduct of internal and external maintenance.
What we are looking for
KEY responsibilities
  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in multiple facility systems and areas to include: Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Life Safety, and Building Monitoring and Control.
    • Mechanical areas of responsibility include: data center cooling solutions, to include chilled water systems and components, various HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems such as roof top units, split units, DX compressors, CRAC (computer room air conditioning) & CRAH (computer room air handling) units, and humidification systems, as well as Kyoto Cooling roof top units, if so equipped.
    • Electrical areas of responsibility include: electrical/critical power distribution from the Utility/Generator main entrance switchgear through the UPS (Uninterruptible Power System) electrical line-ups, and electrical distribution out to the customer load, and load bank operations.
    • Plumbing areas of responsibility include: all water supply piping, fixtures, meters, backflow preventers, water heaters, boilers and plumbing fixtures, such as drinking fountains, sinks, sink drain, traps, trap primers, urinals and commodes, and also internal and roof drain systems.
    • Control system areas of responsibility include: electrical and mechanical controls, monitoring and alarm systems and their operations.
    • Fire Life Safety area of responsibility include: Fire, heat and smoke detection systems & wet and pre-action sprinkler systems, and their associated control and monitoring systems.
  • Work with contractors and consultants for all system expansions, corrections and upgrades
  • Work with the CFOps Data Center Technicians to complete the internal (not assigned to a vendor) buildings maintenance requirements for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, control and fire life safety systems.
  • Assists the CFOps Data Center Technicians in tracking, documenting, and completing our preventive and predictive maintenance schedule.
  • Ensure data center operates at maximum operational efficiency, including analyzing existing operating conditions, recommending new approaches to operations and/or technologies, and improving overall efficiency and cost reduction. Assist with the management of data center systems to avoid unplanned, customer-impacting events.
  • Assist with the management of data floor and back of house/hotel load mechanical and electrical loading capacity, thereby ensuring best use of available power and that the cooling system is operating at its highest efficiency.
  • Perform data trending / tracking and learn to analyze the data.
  • Develop technical writing skills in regard to the research & development of procedures for conducting operations and /or supporting preventative or corrective maintenance activities.
  • Assist in maintaining client cages on the data floor.
  • Order, track and restock facility related consumable items and parts ensuring performance at the lowest possible cost.
  • Regular, predictable attendance is essential for satisfactory performance.

KNOWLEDGE & ATTRIBUTES
  • Required: Have technical abilities applicable to data center operations, as well as innovative cross functional thinking.
  • Desired but not required: Entry level knowledge of information technology (IT), the electrical and mechanical systems used in a data center environment, including, but not limited to the following: electrical distribution and layout, transformers, PLC's, Generators, Switchgear, UPS systems, STS', ATS' PDU's, Chilled Water Systems, CRAC/CRAH's, Pre-Action Sprinkler Systems.
  • Desired but not required: Entry level knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and compliance issues, as well as building codes in regard to fire life safety requirements.
  • Desired but not required: Entry level knowledge in industrial safety best practices (i.e. lockout/tag out, arc flash protection, OSHA and state regulations).
  • Required: Ability to rapidly learn and use PC based, integrated critical monitoring and control systems and proficient with computers to include the utilization of Microsoft programs such as Teams, Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and 365 Copilot.
  • Required: Ability to work in a team environment; Ability to work in a high stress, fast paced environment with shifting priorities; Ability to respond to emergency situations at the data center; Ability to communicate effectively with verbal, visual and listening skills & good problem-solving skills.

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS & CERTIFICATIONS
  • Required: High school diploma or GED.
  • Desired: Associate of Science in Technology or equivalent education and/or work experience.
  • CPR/First Aid and NFPA70E Certification may be obtained during apprenticeship
  • Possession of an OSHA approved forklift certification or the ability to obtain one during apprenticeship period.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience, professional expertise acquired, or relevant work associated with the operation, maintenance and testing of electrical and/or mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Job-related experience must be relevant for position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Primarily walking, standing, and bending with some sitting.
  • Close visual work on a computer terminal.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate any required equipment, as well as to operate computer keyboard, mouse, and other technical instruments.
  • Able to lift heavy equipment, up to 50 pounds

Work conditions & other requirements
  • Data Center environment with varying temperatures and loud noises
  • Potential extensive daily usage of workstation or computer.
  • For apprenticeship: Expected on-site Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm.
  • Must work on-site; no telecommuting permitted.
  • Must wear leather "close-toed" boots with a solid rubber sole (Company provides subsidy to cover expense)
