Uplink Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Uplink Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Uplink Engineer, you need a solid background in RF engineering, satellite communications, and electronics, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with satellite uplink/downlink equipment, spectrum analyzers, and industry certifications such as SBE or Cisco are typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in diagnosing issues and coordinating with teams. These skills ensure reliable signal transmission, minimize downtime, and maintain high-quality broadcast or data services.

What are some common challenges Uplink Engineers face when managing satellite transmissions, and how can they be addressed?

Uplink Engineers often encounter challenges such as signal interference, equipment malfunctions, and maintaining optimal transmission quality under varying weather conditions. To address these issues, they regularly monitor signal performance, perform preventive maintenance, and collaborate closely with both ground operations and network teams to troubleshoot disruptions quickly. Staying updated on the latest satellite communication technologies and adhering to strict operational protocols also helps minimize risks and ensure reliable uplink performance.

What is an Uplink Engineer?

An Uplink Engineer is a professional responsible for managing and maintaining the transmission of data, audio, or video signals from a ground station to a satellite or other remote destination. They ensure that uplink systems operate efficiently, troubleshoot technical issues, and optimize signal quality for reliable communications. Uplink Engineers typically work in broadcasting, telecommunications, or satellite communications industries, and may also be involved in system design and integration. Their role is crucial for live television, radio broadcasts, and secure data transmissions.

What is the difference between Uplink Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectUplink EngineerNetwork Engineer
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, Cisco certificationsCCNA, CCNP, Cisco certifications
Work EnvironmentTelecom sites, data centers, network infrastructureOffice, data centers, enterprise networks
Industry UsageTelecommunications, internet service providersIT, corporate, enterprise networks

Uplink Engineers focus on establishing and maintaining high-capacity connections between network nodes, often in telecom environments. Network Engineers design, implement, and troubleshoot overall network systems across various industries. While both roles require similar certifications and work in network environments, Uplink Engineers specialize in uplink connectivity, whereas Network Engineers handle broader network infrastructure.

Job description

Responsibilities
This position description does not represent a current opening but may be used to identify candidates with skills and experience to fill a position within Technica Corporation once the contract is awarded. Candidates who express an interest may be considered for future positions at Technica Corporation. If a position becomes available that aligns with your qualifications, our recruitment team will contact you.
Technica Corporation is seeking a highly motivated, dynamic, self-directed individual for the Air Force Base Infrastructure Modernization (BIM) Network Engineer position. This position will support the design, implementation, integration, testing, deployment, and sustainment of a modernized base wired network infrastructure. The network engineer works under general supervision and provides solutions to technical problems of moderate scope and complexity.
This role will support a mission-critical infrastructure modernization program that uses Juniper switches, a standards-based leaf-spine campus architecture, a high-availability IP fabric design, secure segmentation, and centralized network operations.
The Network Engineer will serve as a technical contributor, implementing resilient wired network architectures with a scalable, routed IP fabric. The selected candidate will work closely with network architects, cybersecurity engineers, wireless engineers, systems engineers, operations teams, OEM partners, and Government stakeholders to ensure the modernized network supports mission assurance, cybersecurity compliance, operational resiliency, and long-term scalability.
Responsibilities:
  • Configure, test, deploy, and sustain Juniper-based EVPN-VXLAN network fabric solutions across Air Force base environments.
  • Support the establishment of a Network Integration Lab (NIL) with a representative network infrastructure design for qualification testing and acceptance.
  • Implement, configure, and troubleshoot EVPN-VXLAN components, including routed underlay, VXLAN overlay, BGP EVPN control plane, VRFs, VNIs, VLAN-to-VNI mapping, distributed gateway functions, and fabric edge services.
  • Support migration from legacy hierarchical Layer 2/Layer 3 network designs to modern Layer 3 leaf-spine architectures that reduce spanning tree dependencies and improve resiliency.
  • Implement secure network segmentation for mission, administrative, management, wireless, guest, and other enclaves using VLANs, VRFs, VXLAN overlays, ACLs, and routing policy.
  • Configure and validate Junos routing, switching, interface, QoS, management, logging, authentication, and security controls in accordance with approved design baselines.
  • Support integration of wired network services with wireless infrastructure, NAC/AAA services, ClearPass or equivalent policy platforms, and centralized network management tools.
  • Participate in site surveys, current-state assessments, network discovery, port mapping, fiber/uplink validation, migration planning, cutover planning, and installation readiness reviews.
  • Develop and execute network test procedures, including failover testing, redundancy validation, segmentation testing, QoS validation, performance testing, and operational acceptance testing.
  • Support RMF, ATO, DISA STIG, vulnerability remediation, secure configuration, audit logging, and compliance validation activities for network infrastructure.
  • Provide escalation support for local Tier 2 base operations and coordinate with centralized Tier 3/4 engineering and Network Operations Center teams.
  • Support the development and maintenance of network diagrams, IP address plans, VLAN/VRF/VNI mappings, configuration templates, implementation plans, migration runbooks, as-built documentation, and operational handoff materials.
  • Troubleshoot complex network issues involving routing, switching, overlays, underlays, reachability, authentication, segmentation, performance, and high availability.
  • Support change control, maintenance windows, configuration reviews, lab validation, and implementation activities in an Integrated Test Facility or production-like environment.
The position will be based in Sterling, VA, or at other select locations as required by the contract and may support a hybrid work schedule. The final approved work schedule arrangement will be coordinated with the hiring manager. This position may require 10%-20% travel.
Requirements
  • Active Secret clearance with TS/SCI eligibility
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical-related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in a related field
  • Minimum of 2 years' related experience
  • Must have the applicable DCWF DoD/Military training required for this DCWF-aligned work role, or one active certification from the following: SecurityX / CASP+, CCNA, CCNP Security, CCSP, CEH, Cloud+, CND, GCED, GCIA, GCIH, GCLD, GDSA, GFACT, GICSP, GSEC, Network+, Security+, SSCP.
  • Experience with Juniper switches and Junos OS, including configuration, troubleshooting, routing, switching, access-layer design, and high-availability features.
  • Good understanding of BGP, OSPF, Layer 2/Layer 3 switching, VLANs, VRFs, trunking, routing policy, link aggregation, ECMP, QoS, and network resiliency concepts.
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting secure segmentation using VRFs, VLANs, ACLs, route policies, and overlay network constructs.
  • Experience supporting network implementation, migration, cutover, testing, and operational transition activities.
  • Familiarity with DoD or federal cybersecurity practices, including DISA STIGs, RMF support, vulnerability remediation, secure management protocols, MFA/CAC concepts, logging, and audit requirements.
Desired
  • 2 years' experience working on Department of Air Force (DAF) programs and/or knowledge of DAF-relevant projects.
  • Hands-on experience with implementing intent-based networking using EVPN-VXLAN standards and technologies.
