Position Summary
The GEAR UP Department is recruiting for a part-time GEAR UP Tutor. This position is responsible for assisting GEAR UP participants in grade 8 at Patti Welder Middle School and/or STEM Middle School with afterschool subject tutoring (e.g., Math, Science, English) throughout the school year and assisting GEAR UP staff with the delivery of academic skills workshops (e.g., study skills, test taking, STAAR, SAT, ACT, TSI).
Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Use active listening strategies to allow students to determine content and pace of tutoring
  2. Utilize listening and questioning strategies as the primary tutoring method to diagnose student needs and monitor progress
  3. Participate in professional development activities to improve tutorial skills and continue to grow cultural competence and reflection skills
  4. Utilize teachers' class notes, students' feedback, and reflection to improve practice
  5. Recognize the primary role to help students become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners
  6. Be direct and kind with students at the same time
  7. Provide direct assistance in the use of equipment, learning objects, and materials needed for student success
  8. Be available during scheduled hours to tutor GEAR UP participants.
  9. Attend all tutor training sessions.
  10. Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students' diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences
  11. Communicate frequently with GEAR UP staff.
  12. Maintain a positive attitude and provide positive feedback often.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned by GEAR UP staff.
  14. Follow all FERPA guidelines for the handling of student records.

Qualifications
  • Associate degree or higher or, in lieu of a degree, three years relevant teaching experience in the subject area(s) to be tutored is required.
  • Professional reference letter is required.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills is required.
  • Experience working with diverse populations is preferred.

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle controls, key pads, etc.
  • Will be required to sit and reach with hands and arms as well as, sit, stand and walk.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds while loading office supplies and paper.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, some color vision, and the ability to adjust focus from documents to computer screen.
  • Hearing of light to moderate sound is required by this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
