What are Unscripted Story Producers?

Unscripted Story Producers are professionals who shape and structure the narrative of reality TV shows, documentaries, and other non-scripted content. They work closely with raw footage, interviews, and on-set events to craft compelling storylines that engage viewers. Their role involves selecting the best material, developing character arcs, and guiding the editing process to create a cohesive and entertaining final product. Unlike scripted writers, they adapt to real-life events as they unfold, ensuring the story remains true to the unscripted nature of the content.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Unscripted Story Producer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Unscripted Story Producer, you need strong storytelling abilities, experience in television or film production, and often a background in journalism, communications, or media. Familiarity with editing software (such as Avid or Adobe Premiere), storyboarding tools, and production management systems is common. Excellent interpersonal skills, adaptability, and creative problem-solving help producers build rapport with participants and navigate unpredictable storylines. These skills ensure compelling content creation and smooth production workflows in fast-paced, dynamic environments.

What is the difference between Unscripted Story Producer vs Reality TV Writer?

AspectUnscripted Story ProducerReality TV Writer
CredentialsExperience in TV production, storytelling, and sometimes journalismWriting background, journalism, or script development experience
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with producers, editors, and crew on set and in production officesWorks primarily on scripts, storylines, and episode outlines, often in office settings
Industry UsageCommon in reality TV, documentary, and unscripted seriesPrimarily in scripted television, but some reality shows incorporate writers

While both roles involve storytelling in television, an Unscripted Story Producer focuses on shaping narratives through interviews, footage, and real events in unscripted shows. A Reality TV Writer develops scripts, outlines, and storylines, mainly for scripted or semi-scripted content. The roles differ in their focus on scripting versus real footage, but both require strong storytelling skills and industry experience.

What are the main challenges an Unscripted Story Producer faces when shaping narratives from raw footage?

As an Unscripted Story Producer, one of the biggest challenges is weaving compelling, coherent stories from hours of unscripted footage, often with limited or unpredictable content. You'll need to identify key story arcs and character moments while ensuring the final narrative aligns with the show's vision and production guidelines. This role requires flexibility, strong communication with editors and directors, and the ability to creatively solve problems when storylines are missing or unexpected events occur. Collaboration with the post-production team is essential to bring the envisioned story to life while meeting tight deadlines.

Podcast Social Media Producer

DreamThree, Inc

New York, NY โ€ข On-site

Contractor

Posted 19 days ago

Job description

Dream Three is a production company founded by an award-winning filmmaker and a Broadway actor. We create high-impact, mainstream stories that awaken consciousness and drive cultural change. Our projects span mediums and genres to include scripted and unscripted, podcasts and music, theater and live events, publishing, and immersive experiences. We are an elite team: focused, high-trust, and relentlessly committed to mastery - not a 9-to-5 comfort zone. If you thrive in environments with radical candor, clear ownership, and big creative swings, you'll feel at home here.
ROLE OVERVIEW
Dream Three multi-platform story studio creating content across film, TV, theater, audio, publishing, and immersive media. Our podcast division produces shows that spark cultural conversations-content for people who find community in the things they love.
We're looking for a Social Media Producer who doesn't treat social as an afterthought. You'll have a seat at the creative table working closely with producers, talent, and the production team from concept through delivery.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE IN THIS ROLE
โ€ข Social content that feels intentional, not extracted-because you shaped it upstream.
โ€ข A consistent, on-brand content calendar that publishes on time-every time.
โ€ข Clear trajectory toward 100K followers with documented learnings on what's working.
โ€ข A repeatable system where great podcast conversations naturally become great social content.
WHO YOU ARE
โ€ข You think in clips before anyone hits record. You're not just someone with ideas-you're someone who ships. You can pitch a concept in a planning meeting and have it posted by end of week.
โ€ข You move fast but care deeply about craft, community, and the details that make content feel authentic rather than algorithmic. You understand fandom and pop culture-not because you've studied it, but because you've lived it.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
โ€ข Creative Partnership: Work closely with producers and talent to shape content with social in mind from the start. Bring a social-first perspective to creative conversations.
โ€ข Content Production + Coordination: Manage a small team of short-form video editors. Create clear briefs with creative direction. Oversee timelines and ensure deliverables are on-brand and ready to post.
โ€ข Calendar + Execution: Own the social media calendar across all platforms. Coordinate releases with episode drops, guest promotions, and cultural moments. Ensure consistent, on-time publishing.
โ€ข Growth + Experimentation: Develop and test content formats, hooks, and series ideas. Track trends, sounds, and platform shifts. Iterate based on what's working.
โ€ข Analytics + Optimization: Track performance metrics and present clear weekly reports. Use data to inform creative decisions and editor direction.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
โ€ข 2+ years in social media production, content creation, or a similar role (podcast, creator, or entertainment experience strongly preferred).
โ€ข Proven track record of executing-not just ideating. Show us things you've shipped.
โ€ข Deep fluency in short-form platforms (TikTok, Reels, Shorts) and what performs on each.
โ€ข Ability to give clear, constructive creative direction to editors.
โ€ข Strong instincts for hooks, pacing, and social-first storytelling.
โ€ข Highly organized-able to manage multiple deliverables without dropping balls.
โ€ข Genuine connection to fandom and pop culture. We can teach tools; we can't teach passion.
BONUS POINTS
โ€ข Experience working with talent on promotional content and social collaborations.
โ€ข Background in live events, conventions, or experiential content.
โ€ข Experience building or refining production workflows and systems.
โ€ข A personal fandom you're genuinely passionate about (we'll ask).
TOOLS YOU'LL USE
โ€ข Planning & Collaboration: Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, Asana, Frame.io, Agorapulse
โ€ข Tracking: Airtable, Sheets
โ€ข File Sharing: Dropbox
THE DETAILS
โ€ข Hours: 15-20 hours/week to start, with flexibility to scale based on production cycles and live events.
โ€ข Location: Hybrid, with regular meetings in Manhattan.
โ€ข Travel: Occasional travel for events and content production.
โ€ข Contract: Initial 90-day evaluation period with potential for ongoing engagement.
โ€ข Compensation: Commensurate with experience.
โ€ข Start: Immediate availability preferred.
โ€ข Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
If this role feels like a stretch in all the right ways, we'd love to hear from you. Tell us how your skills, experience, and unique point of view can level up this team and the stories we're bringing into the world.
Dream Three is an equal opportunity employer. We value a wide range of backgrounds, identities, and perspectives, and strongly encourage candidates from historically underrepresented communities to apply.
