Unreal Engine Automotive specialists focus on creating realistic vehicle simulations and digital twins for the automotive industry, often working with CAD data and automotive-specific tools. In contrast, Unreal Engine Game Developers design and build interactive video games and entertainment experiences. While both roles require expertise in Unreal Engine, their applications, work environments, and industry focus differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Unreal Engine Automotive Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Unreal Engine Automotive Specialist, you need expertise in 3D modeling, real-time rendering, and a strong grasp of automotive design principles, often supported by a degree in computer graphics, design, or engineering. Proficiency in Unreal Engine, CAD software (such as CATIA or SolidWorks), and visualization tools like Blender or 3ds Max is typically expected. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set standout candidates apart in collaborative, fast-paced environments. These capabilities enable the creation of high-fidelity, interactive automotive visualizations that drive innovation and client satisfaction in the automotive industry.

Is Unreal Engine a good career?

A career as an Unreal Engine developer involves working with real-time 3D creation, often in gaming, film, or automotive visualization. It requires skills in programming, 3D modeling, and understanding of the engine's tools, with opportunities for growth in industries adopting real-time rendering technology.

What is an Unreal Engine Automotive specialist?

An Unreal Engine Automotive specialist is a professional who uses Unreal Engine, a powerful real-time 3D creation tool, to design, visualize, and simulate vehicles and automotive environments. Their work often includes creating photorealistic renderings, interactive product configurators, and immersive virtual experiences for automotive companies. They collaborate with designers, engineers, and marketers to bring car models and concepts to life digitally. This role requires expertise in both Unreal Engine and automotive industry standards.

What cars use Unreal Engine?

Unreal Engine is used in the automotive industry primarily for creating realistic virtual prototypes, simulations, and marketing experiences. Some automakers and suppliers incorporate Unreal Engine for vehicle design visualization, virtual showrooms, and driver assistance system testing, but specific car models do not directly run Unreal Engine as part of their onboard systems.

What is the highest paying job in the automotive industry?

In the automotive industry, senior engineering roles such as Automotive Engineering Managers or Chief Engineers tend to be the highest paying positions, often earning six-figure salaries. These roles require extensive experience, advanced technical skills, and leadership responsibilities, especially in areas like autonomous vehicle development and electric vehicle technology.

How do Unreal Engine Automotive professionals typically collaborate with automotive designers and engineers during a project?

Unreal Engine Automotive professionals work closely with automotive designers and engineers to bring vehicle concepts and prototypes to life in a virtual environment. Collaboration usually involves frequent meetings to discuss design intent, interpret CAD data, and translate technical specifications into visually accurate and interactive real-time models. These professionals often bridge the gap between creative design and technical feasibility, ensuring that the virtual representations accurately reflect engineering constraints while maintaining visual appeal. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as projects may require rapid iteration based on feedback from both design and engineering teams.

How much do Unreal Engine programmers make?

Unreal Engine programmers typically earn between $70,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled developers with expertise in C++ and real-time rendering can command higher salaries, especially in the automotive sector where simulation and visualization are key.

What We Do
Put your design skills to work at a cutting-edge company that challenges the norm. From character and level design to competitive gameplay and system design, help shape the future of interactive entertainment at Epic.
What You'll Do
Epic Games is looking for a Gameplay Designer to help create compelling gameplay experiences across combat, progression, systems, moment-to-moment mechanics, and live gameplay content for our collaboration with LEGO. In this role, you'll partner closely with design leadership, art, engineering, animation, UX, audio, production, and QA to deliver high-quality features from concept through ship.

The ideal candidate is highly collaborative, deeply player-focused, and comfortable working in a fast-paced cross-disciplinary environment where iteration and feedback are core to development.
In this role, you will
  • Work in close collaboration with project leads & directors to design, prototype, tune, and ship features and systems that support the engagement, gameplay, and creative vision of the project
  • Document and create clear, actionable design documents, and iterate on these features, working with a team of developers across multiple disciplines, and oversee their successful implementation from start to finish
  • Get hands-on creating the scripting, data, and content required by those features, diving into the engine, and leveraging other tools
  • Be responsible for soliciting and rapidly integrating feedback from across the team on your own initiative, ensuring we're continually delivering a fun and fresh experience to our players
  • Help establish and maintain design pipelines, best practices, and cross-discipline communication standards to scope, prioritize deliverables, and hit milestone goals
What we're looking for
  • 5+ years of experience shipping first or third-person shooter titles as a Gameplay Designer, working on itemization, gameplay systems, combat, ability systems, features, and content
  • Strong scripting and technical capabilities. Bonus points if you have experience with Unreal Engine and the Ability System
  • Experience working on live-service multiplayer environments
  • Demonstrated talent and a deep understanding of gameplay feel, player motivations or intent, gameplay mechanics, weapon/itemization use, and combat systems contributing to delivering the most emergent player experience
  • Ability to break down high-level creative direction into actionable gameplay features and production-ready tasks
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and react quickly to changing project needs, drive decisions, and then own the outcome and vision
  • Commitment to quality, rapid iteration, and delivering exceptional player experiences
