How much do university compliance jobs pay per year?
What are the main challenges encountered in a university compliance role?
Professionals in University Compliance often face the challenge of staying current with constantly evolving regulations and ensuring those updates are effectively communicated and implemented across campus. Navigating complex situations involving potential conflicts of interest, data privacy concerns, and reporting obligations requires both technical expertise and sound judgment. The role also involves cross-departmental collaboration to build awareness and drive adherence to compliance standards. These challenges make the position both demanding and rewarding, as it directly impacts the university's legal standing and reputation.
What is a university compliance?
A University Compliance job involves ensuring that a university adheres to laws, regulations, and institutional policies. Professionals in this role develop, implement, and monitor compliance programs, conduct risk assessments, and provide training on regulatory requirements. They work to prevent legal and ethical violations and ensure accountability across departments. Their responsibilities may cover areas like data privacy, financial regulations, Title IX, accreditation, and research compliance.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a university compliance position, and why are they important?
To thrive in University Compliance, you need in-depth knowledge of federal and state regulations, institutional policies, and risk management principles, usually supported by a degree in law, higher education administration, or a related field. Familiarity with compliance management software, data reporting systems, and relevant certifications such as Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP) are beneficial. Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication are essential for collaborating across departments and addressing sensitive issues. These skills are crucial for ensuring the university maintains accreditation, avoids legal risks, and fosters a culture of ethical conduct.

Job description
Director of Campus Safety and Compliance
Xavier University's Office of Compliance, Equity, and Ethics (OCEE) is seeking applicants for the Director of Campus Safety and Compliance. This leadership role unifies and advances the University's safety and regulatory compliance efforts by aligning campus partners around a shared culture of accountability-grounded in equity, safety, and institutional ethics. The ideal candidate is a strategic, collaborative leader who can influence across divisions, standardize practices, and drive measurable improvement in campus-wide safety outcomes.
Located within the Office of Compliance, Equity, and Ethics (OCEE), the Director of Campus Safety and Compliance leads, coordinates and unifies the university's safety and compliance efforts. The Director aligns unit-level leaders from across the campus community to cultivate a culture of accountability, ensuring regulatory obligations are met through an integrated strategy that prioritizes equity, safety, and institutional ethics.
The Director coordinates the University's cross-functional safety activities, including Clery Act mandates, emergency readiness, and operational safety, into a cohesive, standardized program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Safety Governance & Leadership: Chair the Campus Safety Sub Committee, a key sub-group of the University Compliance Committee. Through the sub-committee, the Director guides the development and implementation of the Campus-Wide Safety Plan.
Strategic Integration: Lead the Building Coordinator Program and establish clear escalation paths and standard operating procedures (SOPs) across all university units.
Campus-Wide Safety Architecture: Maintain and implement a comprehensive safety plan mapped to federal and state standards, including OSHA, Clery, and NIMS/ICS.
Insurance & Liability Governance: Provide strategic oversight of the university's comprehensive insurance portfolio and risk transfer strategies. Supervise the Risk & Insurance Manager in the annual insurance renewal process and the enforcement of multi-employer safety policies.
Interdisciplinary Compliance: Develop and audit safety frameworks for high-risk areas, including but not limited to laboratory biosafety, athletic event management, residential life & dining safety, and facilities maintenance.
Business Continuity Planning: Architect and maintain the university's business continuity framework to ensure essential operations are resilient during and after a crisis.
Crisis Management & Emergency Readiness: Lead all-hazards planning and drive campus-wide ICS training (IS-100/200/700/800) aligned to FEMA and NFPA 1660 standards. Serves as the primary liaison to local law enforcement and emergency responders to coordinate joint drills, mutual aid agreements, and integrated incident response.
Audit & Reporting: Establish a unified system for tracking safety violations and fining protocols, ensuring financial and operational accountability across all divisions.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
- Bachelor's in Occupational Safety, Environment/Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Emergency Management, Public Administration, Engineering, or related field; Master's preferred.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive leadership experience in campus safety, regulatory compliance, risk management, or law enforcement within a higher education or complex institutional setting.
- A proven track record of influencing and leading departments that do not have a direct reporting line to the position.
- The ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders-from sworn police officers and scientific researchers to student advocates and facilities staff.
- Compliance Expertise: Direct experience managing large-scale federal reporting (e.g., Clery Act, Title IX, or OSHA/EPA laboratory standards).
- Strategic Planning: Experience transitioning an organization from a siloed departmental structure to a collaborative, integrated model.
- Professional Certifications (Preferred): Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or specialized Clery Act Compliance training.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Systems thinking; policy design; audit/inspection discipline; influence without authority; crisis communications; data literacy (KPI dashboards); training design and implementation.

- Often involves sitting, typing, listening, and talking.
- Often involves standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing stairs, kneeling, squatting, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 30 pounds.
To ensure consideration, interested applicants must submit a cover letter and resume on Xavier University's website. Review of applications will start on May 6, 2026 and will be accepted until the position closes at the University's discretion.
