Are you an experienced and certified lifeguard ready to take the lead? Join the City of Hampton as a Senior Pool Lifeguard and play a key role in ensuring the safety and enjoyment of our aquatic facilities. We're looking for dedicated professionals who are passionate about public safety, team leadership, and delivering excellent community service.
About the Role:
As a Senior Lifeguard, you will supervise lifeguard staff, enforce safety regulations, and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies. You'll also mentor junior staff, conduct safety checks, and help maintain a welcoming environment for all pool patrons.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and coordinate lifeguard team activities
  • Monitor pool areas and respond to emergencies
  • Enforce safety rules and city policies
  • Provide mentorship and on-the-job training
  • Conduct inspections and maintain safety records

Minimum Requirements
  • High school graduation or successful completion of GED.
  • Requires a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a lifeguard on a public beach or in a public pool facility to include some experience supervising the work of others.
  • Must possess a current Lifeguard Certification from a nationally recognized organization, i.e. American Red Cross, Ellis & Associates, YMCA of USA, or equivalent.
  • Must successfully complete physical testing to include a demonstration of skills and abilities.
  • Requires successful completion of Preventing Disease Transmission and Oxygen Administration training within 30 days of employment.
  • This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City's current substance abuse policy.
  • Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion (18 and older).
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification and American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) preferred.

Additional Requirements
  • Requires effective communication with internal and external customers.
  • Good hearing and eye sight required.
  • Requires shift work to include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
