Unity Center for Behavioral Health is a 24-hour behavioral and mental health services center located in the greater Portland metropolitan area. We provide immediate psychiatric care and a path to stabilization and recovery for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. Our treatment model is based in trauma informed care principles and is provided by multiple disciplines including psychiatrists, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners, social work, counseling and therapy, and peers. Unity Center offers inpatient mental health treatment to adults and adolescents ages 9 to 17. The Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES) offers emergency services and crisis stabilization for adults aged 18 and older, including a new team that specializes in patients suffering from psychiatric and comorbid substance use disorders.


The Unity Center for Behavioral Health Psychiatric Emergency Service/In Patient Per Diem APP delivers care aligned with a defined scope of practice in the psychiatric emergency and inpatient services, with work expectations operationalized through departmental workflows, productivity standards, and performance expectations consistent with the CBA and institutional policies.

This role is structured to meet contract-defined work expectations of 0 annual sessions, inclusive of 24/7 coverage, aligned with the clinical coverage model and patient care needs of the service.

The Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES)/Inpatient Per Diem APP will participate in departmental scheduling processes, including weekends, holidays, and call responsibilities, with scheduling practices aligned to contract provisions, equitable distribution of coverage, and maintenance of safe, consistent clinical operations.

Clinical Activities:

  • Patient population: Adult emergency mental health services, providing immediate psychiatric care including assessments, treatment planning, and care coordination.
  • Practice area: Emergency services, evening support of inpatient units, inpatient services, independent practice
  • Clinical coverage requirement: 24/7, nights, weekends, holidays, call service
  • Department specific activities: Completing all required charting, trainings, and peer review tasks

All APPs are expected to support the clinical, education, and research mission of OHSU through routine clinical care that includes working with students, trainees, and patients participating in research, consistent with their role, scope of practice, and applicable contract and institutional policies.


  • Successful completion of a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • Two years of experience as a practicing PMHNP. 
    • On a case by case basis individual clinically relevant psychiatric nursing background and experience may be considered.
  • Current RN and APRN NP licensure with the Oregon Board of Nursing.
  • Current national ANCC Certification in the area of specialization.
  • Current BLS or ACLS Certification as indicated for the position.
  • DEA Certification.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required.
  • Professionalism required.
  • Regular, consistent attendance required.
