Position: Physician Assistant - General Surgery
Location: Dothan, Alabama
Schedule: Full-Time Permanent

The system includes a large regional medical center, a physician group, a foundation, and affiliations with a college of osteopathic medicine, supporting residency programs in internal medicine, transitional year, and pharmacy. It is deeply committed to clinical excellence, education, and improving the health and quality of life across the communities it serves.
The flagship medical center is a 420-bed regional referral hub serving over 460,000 residents. It is recognized as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, Level II Trauma Center, and Chest Pain Center, and also operates the region's only Level III NICU and inpatient pediatric unit.

Position Summary
The facility is seeking a Physician Assistant to join its established General Surgery team in Dothan, Alabama.
This position offers the opportunity to work closely with experienced surgeons in both inpatient and outpatient settings, assisting with the management of surgical patients throughout the continuum of care. Responsibilities include first assisting in the operating room, conducting patient evaluations, providing perioperative care, and supporting postoperative recovery.
The Physician Assistant will work in a collaborative environment with surgeons, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, and other specialists to deliver high-quality surgical care to a diverse patient population.
Essential Position Responsibilities
  • Assist surgeons in the operating room as a first assist during general surgical procedures
  • Perform preoperative evaluations and postoperative follow-up visits
  • Conduct patient histories, physical examinations, and assessments
  • Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with supervising surgeons
  • Manage inpatient surgical patients, including admissions, consultations, and daily rounds
  • Order and interpret laboratory tests, imaging studies, and other diagnostic procedures
  • Provide patient and family education regarding surgical procedures, recovery expectations, and postoperative care
  • Perform bedside procedures within scope of practice and institutional guidelines
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic health record (EHR)
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated patient care
Qualifications
Education
  • Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program
Licensure & Certification
  • Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Eligible for or holding an active Alabama Physician Assistant license
  • Current DEA registration or eligibility to obtain
  • Current BLS certification required
  • ACLS certification preferred
Experience
  • Previous surgical or general surgery experience preferred
  • New graduates with strong surgical rotations may be considered
  • Strong clinical, communication, and teamwork skills required
