What are Unisim jobs?

Unisim jobs typically refer to positions that involve working with UniSim, a process simulation software used primarily in the chemical, oil & gas, and process industries. Professionals in these roles use UniSim to model, simulate, and optimize process operations, helping organizations improve efficiency, safety, and profitability. Common UniSim job titles include process engineer, simulation specialist, and process modeling engineer. These jobs require a solid background in chemical engineering, process optimization, and familiarity with simulation tools like UniSim. Employers value candidates with strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and experience in industrial process environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working with Unisim simulation software, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals using Unisim often encounter challenges related to modeling complex processes accurately and integrating simulation results into real-world operations. Navigating the software's advanced features can require a solid understanding of both process engineering and the tool itself, which may necessitate ongoing training. Collaboration with process engineers, IT teams, and operations staff is crucial to ensure simulations reflect actual plant conditions and to validate results. Regularly updating models and maintaining clear documentation can help address these challenges and improve overall project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Unisim Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Unisim Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or process engineering, strong analytical skills, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in AspenTech's UniSim process simulation software and familiarity with related industry tools are essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are key soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and optimizing process designs. These skills ensure accurate simulations, efficient plant operations, and successful project outcomes in process industries.

What is the difference between Unisim vs Process Engineer?

AspectUnisimProcess Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires chemical engineering background, certifications in simulation softwareRequires chemical engineering degree, professional engineering license often preferred
Work EnvironmentPrimarily software-based, working in offices or remoteIndustrial plants, refineries, or manufacturing facilities
Industry UsageUsed for process simulation, design, and optimizationDesign, develop, and optimize industrial processes

Unisim is a simulation software used by engineers to model and optimize chemical processes, while a Process Engineer applies engineering principles to develop and improve industrial processes. Both roles often require chemical engineering credentials, but Unisim focuses on software expertise, whereas Process Engineers work directly in industrial settings.

Job description

Company Overview

Nikkiso Clean Energy & Industrial Gases is a leading provider of cryogenic pumps, heat exchangers, process systems, services, and solutions for the LNG and industrial gases industry. We are a subsidiary of Nikkiso Company Ltd, a leading industrial manufacturer headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, with over $1.5 B in annual revenue, 8000 + employees worldwide, and publicly traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Job Overview

The Senior Process Engineer leads process system design and technical definition for skid-mounted and modular process packages in an EPC execution environment. This role is responsible for developing and validating the process design basis, ensuring system operability, and integrating process requirements across mechanical, I&C, and package design.

A core responsibility of this role is ownership of process simulation models, ensuring that simulation results are accurate, validated, and fully aligned with design deliverables, vendor data, and operating philosophy.

The position requires strong experience in oil & gas, LNG, cryogenic, or industrial gas systems, with the ability to translate simulation outputs into practical, fabrication-ready engineering solutions.

Responsibilities

Process Design & System Definition

  • Develop and lead:
    • Process Design Basis
    • PFDs (Process Flow Diagrams)
    • P&IDs (Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams)
    • Heat & Material Balances
    • Utility balances
    • Line sizing calculations
    • Relief and flare calculations
  • Define operating philosophy including startup, shutdown, turndown, and upset conditions
  • Ensure accurate representation of process control strategies within P&IDs

Process Simulation (Core Responsibility)

  • Develop, own, and maintain steady-state and dynamic process simulation models using:
    • Aspen HYSYS
  • Validate simulation models against:
    • Design basis
    • Vendor data
    • Operating conditions
  • Perform sensitivity studies and optimization analyses
  • Generate simulation-based deliverables including:
    • Stream tables
    • Equipment duty calculations
    • Control strategy inputs
  • Support dynamic simulation where required for control philosophy validation
  • Ensure alignment between simulation outputs and engineering deliverables (PFDs, datasheets, P&IDs)

Engineering Deliverables

  • Develop and review:
    • Process datasheets (equipment, valves, instruments)
    • Control narratives (in coordination with I&C)
    • Cause & effect inputs
    • Process calculations and reports
