Job Overview

This position is responsible for evaluating bid specifications, drawings, and developing timely and accurate estimates for both private and public sector projects (DOT, bridges, docks and terminals, USACE, etc.). The Senior Estimator will play an integral role in ensuring that we know everything required to successfully bid and win projects of varying size and complexity.

He or she will reinforce Massman's Incident & Injury Free Initiative along with our corporate Mission and Vision in the daily performance of their work.

Key Responsibilities

Technical/Estimating:

  • Responsible for bid administration in preparing full estimates on complex work.
  • Work with Project Management to select projects for bidding.
  • Collaborate with designers to arrive at the best design that meets the owner's goals on design-build projects.
  • Foster a culture of quality that incorporates the effect of quality on all operations; take steps necessary to always provide the highest quality product.
  • Coordinate the total estimating effort by the estimating staff relevant to the bids/projects that are assigned.
  • Devise innovative and creative means and methods to construct complex projects; analyze alternative solutions and construction methods to increase competitiveness of the bid.
  • Efficiently perform all stages of an estimate, including estimate setup, take-offs, review, and closeout.
  • Coordinate, prepare, analyze, and maintain accurate quantities with thorough take-offs from plans.
  • Analyze and compile estimate data that impacts the cost of labor, materials, equipment requirements, project location, and other factors to ensure a high quality and timely estimate.
  • Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for job completion.
  • Present estimates and participate in bid reviews with senior management to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare subcontractor bid packages.
  • Exercise creativity and resourcefulness to gain better pricing from subcontractors.
  • Coordinate and maintain communication with subcontractors and vendors.
  • Provide aggressive follow-up with subcontractors to ensure that bids are received.
  • Ensure proper coverage from subcontractors on bid day.
  • Submit 100% of bids and budgets by the bid deadline with no exceptions.
  • Communicate project progress/status with Management.
  • Work with Project Management teams to follow-up on bids and budgets to close the business.
  • Provide engineering and estimating support on awarded contracts as assigned. This may include estimating extra work items, change orders, credits, procuring materials, etc.
  • Coordinate and interface with owners, architects, engineers, project managers, and other project team members to resolve any technical matters during planning and development, negotiation, and contract execution.

Other:

  • This position may also support projects through construction engineering activities when not actively engaged in pursuits for future work.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as directed.
  • Travel as required to attend company meetings, site visits, off-site training, etc.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience successfully working in heavy civil/marine estimating.
  • Advanced knowledge of civil engineering and construction principles, as well as equipment capabilities.
  • Ability to apply critical and creative thinking to devise unique solutions that competitively position Massman in the solicitation process.
  • Knowledge of regional suppliers, subcontractors, and specification requirements.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with HCSS HeavyBid or other similar estimating software.
  • Self-motivated and proven ability to lead collaborative efforts.
  • Good attitude and ability to represent Massman professionally with clients and owners.
  • Excellent grammar, composition, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic and is eager to learn.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Products and Primavera Scheduling Software (P6).
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Travel Requirements

  • Local travel to jobsites and client locations may be required.
