FLEET MECHANIC D/P

JOB SUMMARY
This position is part of a developmental program (D/P) for a qualified mechanic at a Georgia Power Fleet Service Facility. This is a maximum 4-year apprenticeship program. The length of time to complete the program is based on the candidate's current skill level, knowledge, experience and abilities regarding the maintenance of light duty and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
This position requires availability and accessibility in times of emergency, including storm duty which may require working evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and out of state travel. A candidate must live within a 1-hour commute of the designated work location OR be willing to immediately relocate to the area at their own expense. No relocation benefits are currently available. Candidate must be available to work evening hours, which will be determined upon hire.
A collective bargaining unit, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union Number 84, covers this position. Membership is optional. This job is governed by a statewide seniority process which determines individual work locations.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Diagnose and perform major and minor repairs to gasoline, and diesel engines, involving inspection and replacement of broken or worn parts.

  • Diagnose, repair and overhaul power transmission systems, including such parts as clutches, automatic and standard transmissions, differential units, gears, bearings, universal joints and hydraulic units.
  • Inspect service and repair vehicle braking systems.
  • Diagnose, repair and adjust steering mechanisms and other controls.
  • Diagnose and repair vehicle air conditioning systems.
  • Repair vehicle body and chassis parts, using hand and power tools, electric arc and oxyacetylene welding equipment.
  • Road test vehicles; drive truck or equipment as required; inspect vehicles in the shop and field.
  • Diagnose engine, chassis, drive train systems using PC based diagnostic equipment.
  • Diagnose and perform electrical, hydraulic and any other needed repairs in the field. Perform preventive maintenance work, DOT inspections, minor and major repairs on aerial devices, digger derricks, cranes, trenchers, construction equipment, medium/ heavy trucks, automobiles, light trucks and other equipment.
  • Read and interpret manuals, drawings, inspections forms and specifications.
  • Perform welding work on vehicles, equipment and tools; fabricate metal parts for vehicles, equipment, tools, tanks, plates, grates, etc.; straighten and repair bent vehicles, equipment and tools; fabricate and install bumpers, ladder racks, toolboxes, pipe railings etc.
  • Mechanic DP's will be required to test aerial devices which will require operating the platform at elevated heights (must be able to work at heights on a routine basis.)
  • Adherence with safety policies and procedures must be observed at all times.
  • Focus on customer service is a must.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Job Experience and Education:
To be considered the following is required:
  • Documented completion of a 2-year vocational/technical school program in automotive or diesel technology study

OR
  • 4 years or more work experience in a Fleet maintenance facility or military Wheel Vehicle maintenance experience in the following military occupational specialties (MOS): 3521, 3522, 3524, 91B, 91L, and 2T3X2

OR
  • A combination of related work experience in a Fleet maintenance facility (or military Wheel Vehicle maintenance experience) AND training/coursework completed in automotive or diesel study totaling 4 years.

OR
  • Successful completion of a high school's automotive/diesel work base learning program and obtain an automotive/diesel certificate. Note, a successful selected candidate will be in the DP mechanic program for a minimum of 4-years.

ALSO
  • ASE certifications, welding and/or hydraulic certifications are a plus
  • International Fluid Power Society Mobile Hydraulic Mechanic a plus

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to perform hydraulic, electronic, mechanical, maintenance and repairs on medium/heavy duty trucks, aerial devices, light vehicles, forklifts, and other specialized Fleet equipment. Specifically: hydraulic principles, air conditioning, diesel/gasoline engines, automatic transmission, braking systems, electrical systems and electronics, basic cutting/welding, and basic computer skills.
  • Ability to use PC based software to troubleshoot and repair Ford, Freightliner, International, Cummins and Caterpillar systems.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills, good organizational skills and be a proven problem solver.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work in a team environment.
  • Ability to take instruction/direction and translate into actions. Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding activities while working in all types of temperature extremes (cold/hot).
  • Display ethical behaviors and demonstrate "Our Values" which are: Safety First, Unquestionable Trust, Superior Performance and Total Commitment.
  • Exhibited safe work practices as evidenced by a history of working accident and injury free.

Other requirements:
  • Must successfully qualify on two pre-employment exams (which will be administered separately): the written Construction and Skilled Trade Test (CAST) and a Physical Abilities Test (PAT).
  • Must have a valid State of Georgia Motor Vehicle Driver's License.
  • Must currently possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class "A" with air brake certification and a valid DOT Medical Card OR a Class "A" CDL Learner's Permit and a valid DOT Medical Card. Those with a CDL Learner's Permit MUST obtain a Class "A" CDL within 6 months of hire date.
  • Because of the nature of the work, there are weight limitations of our equipment for the safety of our employees... weight guidelines require a candidate' s current body weight to be at or below 280 pounds (fully dressed with work boots but does not include tools) and maintained at all times.
  • Candidate must be able to lift and/or drag up to 50 lbs. of equipment.
  • Candidate should meet the physical requirements of the position, including (but not limited to): bending, kneeling, crawling, climbing, walking, stooping and standing for long periods of time.
  • Immediately upon hire, a new employee must bring (transport to the work site) their own hand tools necessary to perform the job duties, which includes a "Top Toolbox." A minimum tools requirement list will be provided upon hire.
  • Candidate must provide proper composite/steel toe shoes or boots.
  • Candidate must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Candidate must be available for after-hours support, and to work storm duty (additional hours/overtime) which could include working evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and possible out of state travel.
  • Candidate must be available to work at other company locations when needed, including traveling out of town and overnight stay.
  • A thorough background check, drug screen and DOT physical (medical) exam will be conducted prior to employment.
