How much do union stage hand jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average hourly pay for union stage hand in the United States is $19.89, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.83 and $22.36 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

Union stage hands typically do not earn $10,000 a month without significant experience or union seniority; most earn hourly wages that amount to lower monthly pay. High-paying jobs that can reach this level without a degree include specialized trades like commercial pilots, certain sales roles, or entrepreneurship, but these often require skills, certifications, or business acumen rather than formal degrees.

What are Union Stage Hands?

Union Stage Hands are skilled professionals who work behind the scenes in theaters, concerts, film sets, and other live events. They are responsible for setting up, operating, and dismantling equipment such as lighting, sound systems, scenery, and rigging. As members of a labor union—often IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees)—they receive standardized wages, benefits, and protections. Union Stage Hands play a critical role in ensuring productions run smoothly and safely. Their union membership also provides access to training and resources to maintain professional standards.

What are some common challenges faced by Union Stage Hands during live events, and how can they be managed?

Union Stage Hands often encounter challenges such as tight schedules, last-minute changes, and physically demanding tasks during live events. Managing these challenges requires strong teamwork, clear communication with production managers, and adaptability to evolving event needs. Familiarity with safety protocols and efficient organization skills are also crucial to ensure smooth setups and breakdowns while maintaining safety standards. Building good relationships with crew members and staying updated on union guidelines can help stage hands navigate these challenges successfully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Union Stage Hand, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Union Stage Hand, you need a solid understanding of stagecraft, basic carpentry, rigging, and audio/visual equipment, often gained through on-the-job training or vocational courses and union membership. Familiarity with industry-standard tools, safety protocols, and stage automation systems is crucial for efficient and safe production setups. Strong teamwork, adaptability, and effective communication help you collaborate with diverse crews and respond to rapidly changing demands. These skills ensure smooth, safe, and timely execution of live events, which is vital for audience satisfaction and production success.
