What is a union software engineer?

A Union Software Engineer is a software developer who is part of a labor union that advocates for fair wages, job security, and better working conditions. They perform the same technical tasks as other software engineers, such as coding, debugging, and system design, but with added protections and benefits negotiated by their union. These unions help ensure transparent employment policies, collective bargaining power, and support for workplace issues. Unionized software engineers may work in various industries, including tech companies, government agencies, and nonprofits.

How does being a union software engineer differ from a non-union software engineer in terms of work environment and responsibilities?

As a Union Software Engineer, you'll often benefit from defined workplace protections, clearer work hours, and collective bargaining agreements that set standards for pay and benefits. Your responsibilities will still center around software development, but you may also participate in union activities—such as attending meetings, voting on contracts, or collaborating on work-related policies. Daily tasks involve coding, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring software aligns with both organizational and union requirements. This supportive structure can lead to enhanced job security and a strong sense of community among colleagues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a union software engineer, and why are they important?

A Union Software Engineer excels with strong programming fundamentals, software development methodologies, and typically holds a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Git, continuous integration pipelines, and knowledge of union contracts or labor management software may be required. Outstanding teamwork, effective communication, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for bridging technical and union-specific requirements. These abilities are essential for ensuring software solutions meet organizational standards while supporting fair labor practices and productive collaboration.

Job description

About Us
At Union, we are solving one of the hardest challenges in AI infrastructure today: enabling high-velocity iteration while maintaining seamless production-readiness for AI workloads at scale.
Flyte, the open-source project we steward, has emerged as the modern standard for data and AI orchestration, and is trusted by leading technology organizations including LinkedIn, Stripe, and Wayve to run millions of mission-critical workflows on the platform. These workflows comprise data preparation, model training, and scaled inference spanning thousands of GPUs, all major clouds, and on-premise infrastructure.
We have a technical founding team who created Flyte while at Lyft, a deep bench of infrastructure experts from top companies, and have raised from top investors like NEA and Nava Ventures.
About the Role
Union is building the orchestration layer for modern AI and ML workloads. We're hiring a Front-End Software Engineer to build intuitive, high-performance experiences on top of complex distributed systems.
The surface you own is data-dense and live. Workflow runs stream state as they execute, task lists run long, logs and timelines update in real time, and a customer debugging a failed run needs the console to stay fast and legible while thousands of rows move underneath them. This is closer to building a monitoring or observability console than a marketing site or a CRUD app.
You'll work across the Flyte v2 experience, from launching workflows to monitoring runs, debugging failures, managing applications, and onboarding new organizations, in close partnership with product, design, backend, infrastructure, and customer teams.
This role is hybrid, based out of our Seattle office.
What You'll Do
  • Build and maintain a modern React and Next.js application in TypeScript.
  • Develop features across Run Details, Actions, Apps, Settings, workflows, and onboarding.
  • Implement complex UI patterns including infinite scrolling, virtualization, real-time updates, streaming, and timelines.
  • Build interactive data tables with sorting, filtering, pagination, and efficient rendering at volume.
  • Create reusable, responsive components using Tailwind CSS, Headless UI, and our design system.
  • Work with gRPC and Connect APIs and protobuf for type-safe data communication.
  • Use TanStack Query and Zustand for server and client state management.
  • Collaborate with backend engineers to influence API design and deliver cohesive features.
  • Contribute to front-end architecture, technical decisions, testing, and performance improvements.
  • Work directly with customers to understand problems, debug issues, and improve the product.
What We're Looking For
  • 3+ years of professional experience building modern web applications.
  • Strong experience with React, Next.js, and TypeScript.
  • Hands-on work with real-time data, infinite scrolling, virtualization, complex state, or high-volume datasets. This is the part of the job that's hard to fake.
  • A real understanding of front-end architecture and performance optimization.
  • Experience with modern build tooling such as Vite or Webpack.
  • A bias toward simple, reliable, maintainable code and thoughtful user experiences.
  • Clear communication and effective collaboration across teams.
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent professional experience.
Preferred Experience
  • Workflow orchestration, developer tools, cloud infrastructure, or distributed systems.
  • Kubernetes, containers, gRPC, protobuf, or data visualization.
  • Flyte, Ray, Spark, SageMaker, or similar AI and ML platforms.
  • Working directly with enterprise customers.
Our Stack
  • Core. React, Next.js, TypeScript.
  • Styling. Tailwind CSS, Headless UI, internal design system.
  • State and data. TanStack Query, Zustand, gRPC and Connect, protobuf.
  • Tooling. Vite, Webpack.
