HVAC TB Journeymen Mechanic I (un)

Johnson Controls is looking for forward-thinking HVAC talent to support our fast-growing North America business. Role Overview

As an HVAC TB Journeymen Mechanic I, you will support light commercial and/or heavy commercial customers by performing maintenance, repair, replacement, and troubleshooting work on commercial heating and cooling systems. You will work with experienced journeymen, servicemen, and apprentices to solve service issues, improve facility performance, and provide trusted recommendations that help customers operate efficiently.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform maintenance, repair, and replacement services on commercial heating and cooling systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve commercial HVACR service issues in light commercial and/or heavy commercial environments.
  • Partner with journeymen on the repair of centrifugal, steam turbine, and open-drive screw chillers.
  • Support commissioning and aftermarket service by identifying facility inefficiencies and service-related issues.
  • Provide recommendations, solutions, and quotes that help customers improve system performance and efficiency.
  • Support branch customer activities, including troubleshooting, installation, and repair.
  • Communicate problem, cause, and corrective actions clearly to customers and internal teams.
How You Will Do It
  • You will take ownership of service work with a strong focus on safety, accuracy, and integrity.
  • You will stay close to the work, use practical troubleshooting skills, and remove obstacles for customers by finding effective solutions quickly.
  • You will apply a continuous-improvement mindset, using clear feedback and problem-solving to improve service outcomes every day.
  • You will work as one team with local mechanics, servicemen, and apprentices, building trust through collaboration and respect for different perspectives.
  • Use your HVAC piping, plumbing, pipefitting, and mechanical equipment service experience to diagnose and repair commercial systems.
  • Support technical work on rooftop units, pumps, fans, towers, boilers, chillers, compressors, and plumbing systems.
  • Use mechanical shaft alignment with dial indicators and vibration equipment to troubleshoot drivelines, pumps, fans, and compressors.
  • Complete customer documentation and service communication with attention to detail across interpersonal, digital, and written channels.
  • Participate in training through the Service Technical Academy (STA) and apply what you learn on the job, including HVAC product knowledge and sales quoting.
Qualifications
  • Membership in, or willingness to join, the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada, AFL-CIO.
  • Minimum of three years of commercial and/or industrial mechanical troubleshooting experience in the HVAC industry.
  • Practical work experience in HVAC piping, plumbing, pipefitting, or mechanical equipment service.
  • Practical working experience with light commercial or commercial mechanical equipment.
  • Experience with rooftop units, pumps, fans, towers, boilers, chillers, compressors, and plumbing.
  • Mechanical shaft alignment experience using dial indicators for pumps, fans, and compressors.
  • Ability to use vibration equipment to troubleshoot drivelines.
  • Ability to write and communicate customer problem, cause, and corrective-action information clearly.
  • Attention to detail and strong interpersonal, digital, and written communication skills.
  • Self-starter with a desire to learn and apply new knowledge on the job.
  • Willingness to travel 10% to 20% to support branch customer activities, troubleshooting, installation, and repair.
  • Ability to pass a knowledge examination to assess proficiencies.
  • Universal EPA refrigerants license.
  • Applicable state or local licensing.
  • Valid driver's license.

  • Factory certification through the Service Technical Academy (STA).
  • Experience supporting customer recommendations and upselling opportunities.

Pay Range: $40.00 - $50.00. Hourly rate determined by the CBA/rate sheet. Benefits are provided through a local labor union aligned with a collective bargaining agreement.
