These mechanics often work in industries like automotive, construction, transportation, or manufacturing, following union-negotiated wages, benefits, and work conditions. Their responsibilities may include diagnosing mechanical issues, performing routine maintenance, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Union membership provides job security, collective bargaining rights, and access to training programs.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a union mechanic?

To thrive as a Union Mechanic, you need expertise in mechanical repairs, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance, often backed by a vocational degree or apprenticeship and union membership. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, specialized machinery, and safety certifications such as OSHA training are commonly required. Strong teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with colleagues and interacting with supervisors. These skills ensure efficient, safe operations and uphold high industry standards essential to union workplaces.

What kind of work environment can I expect as a union mechanic?

Job description

About the Role
Step into a critical role where your technical expertise directly supports the frontline of patient care. As a Facilities Mechanic in our state-of-the-art healthcare environment, you will be the backbone of our operations, ensuring that the complex systems powering our healing spaces run safely and efficiently. This is more than just a maintenance job; it is a chance to work within a stable, supportive union environment where your skills are respected, your contributions are valued, and your career growth is actively encouraged. You will tackle a diverse range of challenges daily, from HVAC and electrical troubleshooting to general building repairs, all while knowing that your work is essential to the comfort and safety of our patients and medical staff.
We believe in respecting your work-life balance while maintaining the high standards our facility demands. Your schedule is structured to provide predictability and consistency, primarily operating on a Monday-Friday day shift. To ensure our round-the-clock operations remain seamless, you will participate in a rotating weekend and alternating holiday schedule, allowing you to plan your personal time well in advance. If you are a dedicated professional looking for a role that combines the stability of a union position with the meaningful purpose of a healthcare setting, we want you on our team. Come help us keep the heartbeat of this hospital strong.
What You'll Do
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and facility systems to support safe and efficient hospital operations.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain equipment including boilers, chillers, air handling units (AHUs), motors, and Power House systems.
  • Monitor building systems through the Building Automation System (BAS), complete mechanical room rounds, and respond to equipment issues.
  • Maintain plumbing systems and fixtures, perform drain cleaning, repair doors and hardware, and complete general maintenance and painting projects.
  • Support patient care environments by responding to service requests, adjusting operating room conditions, changing medical gas cylinders, and installing facility equipment as needed.
  • Conduct water and chemical testing, assist with maintenance projects, and participate in the on-call rotation to ensure continuous facility operations.

What You'll Need
  • High School Diploma, GED, or trade school diploma with 3-4 years of job-related experience. In lieu of a diploma, a combination of experience and education will be considered.
  • Experience with boilers required.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Meet the physical requirements of this role including stooping, standing, walking, climbing stairs/ladders, and the ability to lift/carry heavy loads of 50 lbs. or more.
  • Ability to use existing procedures to solve standard problems.
  • Experience with analyzing information and standard practices to make judgments.
  • In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office products. Examples include Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Organizational skills with a strong inquisitive mindset.

*Should any element of this Job Description conflict with the provisions of an applicable collective bargaining agreement, the terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement will prevail.
