What is a Union LPN nurse?

A Union LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) is a nursing professional who is part of a labor union that advocates for fair wages, benefits, and working conditions. These nurses provide direct patient care, such as monitoring vital signs, administering medications, and assisting with daily activities, under the supervision of RNs and doctors. Being in a union can offer job security, collective bargaining power, and support in workplace disputes.

What are the main differences in work environment for a Union LPN nurse compared to a non-union LPN role?

Union LPN Nurses often benefit from clear workplace protections, standardized schedules, and collective bargaining agreements that outline pay, benefits, and job expectations. The work environment can include more structured protocols for addressing workplace issues and grievances, which helps create a supportive atmosphere for staff. Union LPNs typically have strong collaboration with fellow union members and management, as well as regular communication with union representatives. While daily clinical responsibilities are similar to those of non-union LPNs, union roles may offer additional resources for professional support and advocacy. This can translate to a more predictable and balanced work-life experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Union LPN nurse position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Union LPN Nurse, strong patient care skills, clinical knowledge, and an active LPN license are essential. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), medication administration systems, and compliance with union and healthcare facility protocols are typically required. Excellent communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution skills set candidates apart, especially when navigating unionized workplace dynamics. These abilities are vital for ensuring high-quality patient care, consistent documentation, and a positive work environment in a collaborative, structured setting.

  • Operational Coordination: Ensure physician orders are processed timely and maintain a safe, pleasant, and orderly living environment.

  • Patient Safety: Expertly utilize transfer equipment (gait belts, mechanical lifts, etc.) and handling techniques to ensure resident safety during mobility.

  • Emergency Preparedness: Demonstrate knowledge of department-specific safety, fire, and disaster plans.

  • Education: Direct and assist with health education for residents and their families or significant others.

Required Qualifications

Desired Skills
  • Clinical Knowledge: Strong foundational nursing skills and familiarity with a wide range of medications.

  • Efficiency: Ability to multi-task and prioritize care in a fast-paced long-term care setting.

  • Teamwork: A collaborative spirit to work with the interdisciplinary team to achieve resident goals.

Location and Work Type
  • Location: International Falls, MN
