Responsibilities
Position Summary

The First Assistant Engineer (1AE) is the senior engineering officer subordinate to the Chief Engineer and is responsible for the administration, supervision, and safe operation of the Engine Department. The 1AE provides day-to-day leadership of engineering personnel, directs maintenance and repair activities, ensures compliance with regulatory and company requirements, promotes a strong safety culture, and assumes the duties of the Chief Engineer when required. 

Reporting Relationship
  • Reports directly to the Chief Engineer.
  • Supervises licensed and unlicensed members of the Engine Department as assigned.
  • Serves as the senior engineering officer and acts on behalf of the Chief Engineer during periods of absence or incapacitation. 
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Personnel Management
  • Establish and maintain professional standards within the Engine Department.
  • Ensure engineering personnel comply with the Chief Engineer’s standing orders, vessel procedures, and company policies.
  • Develop and coordinate work assignments in conjunction with the Chief Engineer.
  • Supervise engine department personnel during daily operations and maintenance activities.
  • Conduct daily toolbox talks and safety discussions.
  • Provide training, mentoring, and onboarding for newly assigned engineering personnel.
  • Conduct thorough turnover and relief procedures during crew changes. 
Engineering Operations
  • Assist in the safe and efficient operation of all propulsion, auxiliary, electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
  • Oversee planned maintenance, repairs, inspections, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Maintain Engine Department work logs and required records.
  • Ensure monthly testing and changeover of standby and redundant equipment.
  • Attend the engine room during maneuvering operations unless relieved by the Chief Engineer.
  • Monitor equipment reliability and operational readiness to support vessel schedules and mission requirements. 
Safety, Environmental & Regulatory Compliance
  • Lead by example in promoting a culture of safety, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence.
  • Ensure all Engine Department activities comply with applicable U.S. Coast Guard regulations, STCW requirements, company policies, and the Vessel Safety Management System (VSMS).
  • Participate in safety meetings, incident investigations, risk assessments, and corrective action processes.
  • Ensure compliance with work/rest hour requirements and pollution prevention measures.
  • Exercise Stop Work Authority when unsafe conditions or practices are identified. 
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Assist the Chief Engineer with departmental planning, scheduling, and resource management.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and operational documentation.
  • Coordinate engineering priorities to support vessel operational requirements.
  • Ensure continuity of operations through effective turnover, communication, and recordkeeping. 

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential endorsed as First Assistant Engineer Unlimited 
  • Valid STCW endorsements required for the assigned vessel.
  • Must possess and maintain Tankerman Engineer, Tank Vessel Engineer, Tank Vessel PIC, or other USCG endorsement that authorizes service as a licensed engineering officer on the assigned tank vessel.
  • Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD).
  • Lifeboatman/Proficiency in Survival Craft endorsement, as applicable.
  • RFPEW
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Valid Passport.
  • Ability to meet all company medical, training, and compliance requirements. 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous tanker vessel experience as a licensed engineering officer.
  • Prior service as a First Assistant Engineer on tank vessels.
  • Experience with tanker cargo support systems and associated engineering equipment.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Strong maintenance planning, troubleshooting, and crew development skills.
