Role Summary

The Aptitude Technician 2 (Union) role is responsible for performing complex installation, routing, labeling and testing of fiber and low-voltage systems in a variety of environments, assisting with the completion of all cabling within a project. Environments and project types may include data centers, hospitals and commercial construction, both new build and remodels of existing buildings. Role responsibilities are not all encompassing as specific work tasks, project types and build phases drastically vary. This is a broad representation of the type of tasks and requirements required of Aptitude Technicians at JE Dunn.   All activities will be performed in support of the strategy, vision, and values of JE Dunn.

Key Role Responsibilities - Core

APTITUDE FIELD TECHNICIAN FAMILY - CORE

  • Working knowledge of basic tools
  • Basic understanding and use of principles of layout and construction math as necessary per project needs
  • Basic understanding of cabling technology and installation techniques
  • Pulls, routes and secures copper and fiber cabling per drawings and standards
  • Assists with device rough-in, mounting of back boxes and pathway installation
  • Terminates jacks, patch panels and assists with labeling and documentation
  • Supports testing and troubleshooting of finished installations
  • Responsible for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) compliance and following OSHA standards
  • Adheres to JE Dunn safety standards
  • Role requires personal ownership of all necessary hand tools and pouches
  • Expected behavioral standards:

Key Role Responsibilities - Additional Core

APTITUDE TECHNICIAN 2 (UNION)

In addition, this position is responsible for:

  • Uses knowledge of defined specifications to accurately install, terminate and test systems
  • Installs and mounts end devices such as cameras, card readers, nurse call components
  • Identifies and escalates minor installation issues
  • Performs continuity and loss testing with light source / power meter or OLTS tools
  • Reads and interprets one-line diagrams and patch schedules
  • Documents test results and assists in identifying failed components
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to perform work accurately and completely, and in a timely manner
  • Effective Communication skills, verbal and written
  • Knowledge of specific trades and scopes of work
  • Proficiency with termination tools and inspection scopes.
  • Familiarity with OTDR operation a plus.
  • Knowledge of TIA/EIA-568 and BICSI standards.
  • Familiar with TIA/EIA and BICSI standards, cable testing, and color codes
  • Proficient with hand tools and test equipment such as OLTS or OTDR
  • Basic understanding of principles of layout and construction math
  • Knowledge of types and uses of fiber and copper cabling
  • Ability to complete assigned duties with minimal guidance
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate within a team, both internally and externally
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED (Preferred)
  • Apprentice and/or Vocational/Technical/Trade training (Preferred)
  • In lieu of the above requirements, equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
Experience
  • 2+ years experience in specific trade (Preferred)
  • 2+ years commercial construction experience (Preferred)
Working Environment
  • Must be able to lift at least to 50 pounds
  • May be exposed to extreme conditions (hot or cold)
  • Must be willing to work non-traditional hours to meet project needs
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • May require use of respirator
  • Must be comfortable working at projected heights, narrow workspaces, various depths (trenches)
  • Frequent activity: Standing, Walking, Climbing, Bending, Kneeling, Carrying, Swinging, Reaching above Shoulder, Pushing, Pulling, Balancing
  • Occasional activity: Sitting, Viewing Computer Screen
  • Specific environmental and physical requirements may vary by project type/location
