What is a union apprentice?

A union apprentice is an individual who is learning a skilled trade through a structured program managed by a labor union. Apprenticeships combine on-the-job training with classroom instruction and allow apprentices to earn while they learn. Union apprenticeships are typically sponsored by joint labor-management committees and are designed to develop the skills needed for a specific trade, such as electrician, plumber, or carpenter. Upon completion, apprentices usually become journeymen and can work independently in their trade.

What does a union apprentice do?

As a union apprentice, your daily responsibilities will often include assisting experienced journeymen with hands-on tasks, preparing job sites, operating tools and machinery under supervision, and learning essential trade skills through practical experience. You will also attend scheduled classroom training sessions where you'll study safety protocols, trade theory, and industry best practices. Collaboration is important, as you'll work closely with other apprentices and seasoned professionals, receiving feedback and gradually taking on more complex assignments as your skills develop. This structure ensures you gain a comprehensive understanding of the trade while building strong working relationships within your union team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a union apprentice?

To thrive as a Union Apprentice, you need a basic understanding of trade skills, a high school diploma or GED, and often must meet specific union entry requirements. Familiarity with hand and power tools, safety protocols, and sometimes OSHA certification are commonly required. Strong work ethic, eagerness to learn, teamwork, and good communication skills help apprentices excel in demanding environments. These attributes are vital for ensuring safety, skill development, and effective collaboration on job sites.

Our values are grounded in responsible stewardship, caring leadership, and developing people to reach their full potential.
We are seeking a motivated and people-focused Electrical Supervisor to lead a team of approximately 20 union electricians at our Longview Lumber facility, one of the largest and most productive lumber manufacturing operations in the company. This leader will play a critical role in ensuring employee safety, improving equipment reliability, developing electrical talent, and maintaining consistency in maintenance and troubleshooting practices.
Located in Southwest Washington, the Longview area offers an exceptional quality of life with access to world-class outdoor recreation, including fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, boating, skiing, and mountain biking. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead training and workforce development efforts to build technical capability and succession strength within the electrical organization.
  • Support planning and scheduling processes to ensure maintenance resources are aligned with business priorities.
  • Utilize SAP CMMS, maintenance metrics, and reliability tools to prioritize work and improve overall effectiveness.

This position is primarily a day-shift leadership role and will typically include one weekend day as part of the regular work schedule (e.g., Wednesday - Saturday). As a leader in a manufacturing environment, the Electrical Supervisor is expected to maintain regular visibility across all shifts to support safety, employee development, troubleshooting, communication, and consistent execution of maintenance standards. Schedule flexibility is occasionally required to support planned outages, critical equipment issues, and business needs.
We've been delivering quality building products and solutions to our customers for more than 100 years. From builders and dealers to specifiers and homeowners, we offer exceptional product performance and unparalleled support.
For more than a century, we've been building our reputation as a leader in sustainable wood products.
