Work EnvironmentEngineering firms, manufacturing, aerospace, automotive industriesDesign studios, manufacturing companies, engineering departments
CertificationsOften requires CAD software certifications, engineering degreesDesign certifications, CAD training courses

Unigraphics Nx is a comprehensive CAD/CAM/CAE software used mainly by engineers for complex product development, while CAD Designers focus on creating detailed drawings and models using CAD tools. Both roles require CAD proficiency, but Unigraphics Nx professionals typically handle more advanced engineering tasks.

What Is Unigraphics NX?

Unigraphics NX, also known as Siemens NX, is a software package for high-end computer-aided design/computer-aided engineering/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM/CAE) programs. The software is used for engineering analysis, design, and machining modules for manufacturing. It utilizes 2D sketch modeling, advanced surface modeling, 3D modeling, drafting and drawing techniques, and assembly. You can gain the knowledge and skills necessary to use the program through online classes. You learn how to edit, move, and copy sketches, create 2D and 3D models, and assemble and apply constraints.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Unigraphics NX (Siemens NX) Designer or Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Unigraphics NX Designer or Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or product design, engineering principles, and experience with 3D CAD modeling, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with Siemens NX (Unigraphics) software, as well as familiarity with PLM systems like Teamcenter, is typically required, and certifications in NX can be advantageous. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help individuals collaborate with cross-functional teams and deliver accurate designs. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing high-quality, manufacturable designs and ensuring efficient workflow in engineering and product development environments.

What is Unigraphics NX?

Unigraphics NX, now known as Siemens NX, is an advanced computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and computer-aided engineering (CAE) software suite. It is widely used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing for product design, engineering analysis, and manufacturing planning. NX offers powerful tools for modeling, drafting, simulation, and assembly, enabling engineers and designers to develop complex products efficiently. Its integrated environment streamlines the design-to-production process, improving productivity and collaboration.

Are Unigraphics and NX the same?

Unigraphics and NX refer to the same CAD/CAM software developed by Siemens PLM Software. The software was originally called Unigraphics but was rebranded as NX in the early 2000s. As a job seeker, familiarity with NX is essential for roles involving advanced CAD modeling and engineering design.

What is Unigraphics called now?

Unigraphics NX is now called Siemens NX. It is a high-end CAD/CAM/CAE software used for product design and engineering, and the name change reflects its integration into Siemens' suite of digital solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by Unigraphics NX designers in collaborative projects?

Unigraphics NX designers often collaborate with engineers, manufacturers, and other design professionals, which can present challenges in version control, data compatibility, and communication. Ensuring everyone is working on the latest model version and properly managing changes in complex assemblies requires strong organizational skills and familiarity with PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) systems. Additionally, integrating feedback from various stakeholders while maintaining design intent can be demanding, but effective communication and proficiency in NX's collaboration tools help streamline the process.

Job description

Vehicle Glass Integration DRE (NX/Teamcenter)

Do you thrive at the intersection of design release, CAD rigor, and OEM collaboration?

Is this you?
  • You’re fluent in Unigraphics/NX, comfortable in Teamcenter, and unfazed by complex GD&T.
  • You can lead DFMEA and design reviews that result in crisp decisions and clean actions.
  • You enjoy negotiating specs and tolerances with OEMs and translating them into releasable data.
  • You switch contexts easily: one day on a plant floor, the next at an OEM build event, then back at a test facility validating performance.
What you’ll tackle
  • Own DRE responsibilities for fixed glass and door glass systems, applying Carlex and OEM design guidelines.
  • Drive programs from SOR award through launch and ongoing maintenance, coordinating internal/external stakeholders.
  • Create and release full-solid CAD models and 2D/3D datasets; approve designer outputs for assemblies and components.
  • Lead DFMEA and structured design reviews; document and present outcomes to the program team, OEM, and internal CFT.
  • Serve as the technical conduit among Carlex plants, suppliers, and the OEM customer.
  • Negotiate technical specifications, tolerance schemes, and alternative design proposals with OEM engineering.
  • Support prototyping at glass, value-add, and component facilities; support pre-production and production builds at OEM sites.
  • Provide on-site support at OEM facilities, off-site design locations, designated test centers, and vehicle assembly plants.
  • Lead PDTs with OEM partners and internally with Program Management.
Experience & credentials
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Design/Engineering.
  • 5+ years in automotive product development; glazing experience is a plus.
  • 5+ years in automotive product design and GD&T using CAD tools (Unigraphics/NX required; CATIA a plus).
  • Background with major automotive OEMs preferred; Teamcenter exposure is a plus.
  • Previous experience with General Motors design and engineering release systems.
Working style & skills
  • Advanced/intermediate Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint).
  • Hands-on problem solver with strong analytical chops.
  • Clear communicator and collaborative teammate who finds common ground fast.
  • Dependable, driven, and aligned with Carlex values: Safety, Customer Focused, Teamwork, Excellence, Trust.
