Underwriters review applications for loans, insurance policies, or securities to determine if they meet the organization's guidelines and standards. They analyze information such as credit history, financial statements, and other risk factors to make informed decisions. The goal of underwriting is to ensure that the institution takes on acceptable levels of risk while providing financial products or services.
