What can I expect from the training and mentorship provided in an Underwriter Development Program?

Participants in an Underwriter Development Program typically receive a blend of classroom instruction, on-the-job training, and mentorship from experienced underwriters. You can expect to rotate through various lines of business, work on real case studies, and gradually take on more responsibility as you build your technical and analytical skills. Mentors and managers provide regular feedback and support, helping you to understand underwriting guidelines, risk assessment, and client interaction. This structured training approach prepares you for a successful underwriting career and often leads to advancement opportunities within the company.

What is an Underwriter Development Program?

An Underwriter Development Program is a structured training initiative offered by insurance companies or financial institutions to prepare individuals for careers as underwriters. Participants typically receive a mix of classroom instruction, on-the-job training, and mentorship to learn about risk assessment, policy evaluation, and decision-making processes. The goal of the program is to equip trainees with the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate insurance applications, determine coverage terms, and assess potential risks. These programs often lead to full-time underwriting positions upon successful completion.

Job description

Program Underwriter, Waste Hauler Program

Amwins Program Underwriters ("APU") is conducting a candidate search looking for a Program Underwriter in the Waste Hauler Program. Please visit www.amwins.com/opco/amwins-program-underwriters.

APU is a Managing General Agent (MGA) with brokerage capabilities within the Amwins Underwriting division. Depending on the specific program, we do everything from underwriting to coverage analysis, brokering, pricing, claims, actuarial, loss control, policy issuance, and audits. We administer over 35 programs generating more than $630 million in premium across nine office locations and through 190 dedicated professionals.

Within APU, we create insurance programs for underserved niches. Generally, these industries are underserved because the risk is difficult to understand and service, as with the roofing industry. Our expertise in these niches allows us to out select the competition, allowing our programs to grow over the long term while maintaining stable relationships with our carrier partners. While not an insurance company, we underwrite on behalf of the insurance companies we partner with on our various programs. Our programs typically focus on casualty lines of coverage, although some may include property.

APU's parent company is Amwins Group, Inc. ("Amwins") is the largest wholesale brokerage and group benefits insurance administrator in the US with annual placed premiums over $39B+, 155 locations around the world, and 7.3K employees. Amwins has expertise across a diversified mix of property, casualty, and group benefits products, and offers value-added services to support some of these products, including product development, underwriting, premium and claims administration and actuarial services.
