This is general law enforcement and public safety work in the protection of life and property and in the execution of orders issued through the authority of the City of Doral Police Department.
An employee in this classification may perform varied assignments in motorized patrol, traffic control and enforcement, accident investigation, preliminary and follow-up investigation at crime scenes, serving writs in criminal proceedings, and assisting in public safety education programs. Work involves an element of personal danger and high levels of physical, emotional, and mental stress to deal with people in various situations.
Supervision Received and Exercised
This position is classified as a non-exempt, full-time position with an 40 hour work-week schedule. The work schedule and working hours are defined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. A copy of the agreement is available in the City of Doral website: CLICK HERE FOR CBA
The role of Police Officer receives assignments from the superior officers who review work methods and results through reports, inspections, and discussions. Police Officers generally works one shift per 24-hour period, but will be subject to recall to on-duty status as the department warrants. In addition, Police Officers are required to respond to any emergency and/or criminal situation that they observe while off duty and function as a Police Officer until relieved by regular on-duty units.
This position requires to act without direct supervision and exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies; situations often arise where the Police Officer will have the responsibility for making decisions regarding the use of deadly force in protecting citizens and themselves without the opportunity for prior supervisory advice or assistance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
  • Patrols the City of Doral area in a radio equipped car or motorcycle to preserve law and order.
  • Responds to a variety of calls that require several intervention approaches ranging from personal counseling techniques to the use of physical or deadly force.
  • Police Officers respond to crashes, domestic disturbances, various misdemeanors and felonies, traffic and crowd problems, etc.
  • Administers first aid, conducts preliminary investigations, locates evidence, obtains information from witnesses, completes reports, makes arrests and escorts prisoners to jail.
  • Testifies in court concerning work activities.
  • Serves Criminal and Metropolitan writs; conducts search and surveillance to determine whereabouts of person to be served; arrests fugitives and returns person to proper authority.
  • Serves as instructor in the teaching of traffic safety to civic and school groups; broadcasts traffic information through commercial radio stations.
  • Assists in departmental programs and cooperates with other agencies in dealing with social, medical, and psychological problems such as domestic crises, alcoholism, attempted suicides, and other emotional disturbances.
  • Participates in underwater search and recovery missions, mobile crime laboratory investigations, undercover surveillance, civil defense exercises, rescue operations, marine patrol, and vice raids.
  • Directs traffic at local schools as needed.
  • Patrols local schools and communities as needed.
  • Fills out paperwork, performs roll call and assigns duties as needed.
  • Assists in the presentation of departmental training programs.
  • Works variable hours and shift schedules as needed.
Additional Duties:
  • Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING
  • For Certified Police Officers:
    Employed in a full-time sworn classification by (or separated within preceding 24 months from) another police agency, possession of a Basic Recruit Certificate of Compliance from the State of Florida or its equivalent, completed probation with a Florida law enforcement agency, and one year of police experience; OR
  • For those currently enrolled in Florida Basic Recruit Training (Police Academy): Applications will now be accepted, however in order for candidate to be hired, they must meet the minimum requirements of a Police Officer prior to receiving a start date, which include passing the Basic Abilities Test, Florida Basic Recruit Training Program and have achieved a passing score on the State Officer Certification Exam;
  • Physical Abilities Test (PAA): All applicants are required to pass the PAA test.
    The test consists of the following requirements:
    • A timed mile run
    • Push-ups (1 minute time limit-reps)
    • Sit-ups (1 minute time limit-reps) and
    • A timed 300 Meter run
      The test is conducted in a continuous manner resulting in a total composite score. To receive a passing score, the candidate must complete the PAA in a time period established based on minimum age requirements or less.
  • High School Diploma OR GED
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record at time of application. Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License before receiving a final offer of employment.
  • Minimum age of 19.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Have not been convicted of any felony or of any misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement.
  • Any person who, after July 1, 1981, pleads guilty or nolo contendere to, or is found guilty of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement, shall not be eligible for employment or appointment as an officer, not-withstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication.
  • Have never received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
  • Have good moral character.

    • Must possess visual acuity not exceeding 20/100 uncorrected, corrected to 20/30 or better. Contact lenses are permitted.

Sworn employees may choose to bank holiday time worked on an hour for hour basis with no cap on leave accrued.
In addition, employees received two (2) personal days and one (1) Birthday. The personal days and Birthday must be used before the end of the fiscal year.
PAID TIME OFF (PTO)
Full-time sworn employees accrue paid time off (PTO) that can be used for any reason without accrual limits. Sworn employees do not accrue sick or vacation leave.
Forty (40) hours of PTO shall be added to the employee's PTO balance on the anniversary of the employee's hire date every year thereafter. Additionally, sworn employees shall accrue PTO on a bi-weekly basis at the following rates:
Sworn Personnel Accrual Rates:
0-4 years of service ->6.15 hours bi-weekly
5-9 years of service ->7.68 hours bi-weekly
10 or more years -> 9.23 hours bi-weekly
PTO shall NOT be earned or accrued by an employee during an unpaid leave of absence, suspension, or when the employee is otherwise on a non-pay status.
COMPENSATORY TIME (COMP. TIME)
Non-exempt sworn employees may earn compensatory ("comp") time which is earned at the rate of one and one-half hours for each overtime hour worked.
