What does an underground surveyor do?

An Underground Surveyor is responsible for mapping and measuring underground mines, tunnels, and other subsurface structures. They use specialized surveying equipment to ensure accuracy in excavation, construction, and resource extraction. Their work helps maintain safety, comply with regulations, and optimize mining or construction operations. Accurate underground surveys are crucial for preventing structural failures and ensuring efficient resource management.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an underground surveyor?

To thrive as an Underground Surveyor, a strong background in geospatial measurement, land surveying, and geology is typically required, often supported by a relevant degree or technical certification. Proficiency with specialized surveying instruments such as total stations, GPS, laser scanners, and software like AutoCAD or GIS systems is essential. Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in challenging environments set top performers apart. These abilities ensure accurate data collection and analysis, safety, and effective communication within project teams in subterranean settings.

What are the unique challenges faced by underground surveyors during projects?

Underground Surveyors often work in confined, low-light, and sometimes hazardous conditions, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols and adaptability to rapidly changing environments. Navigating complex underground networks and dealing with limited access can make data collection and equipment setup more demanding than surface surveying. Collaboration with engineers, construction teams, and safety officers is frequent, as accurate measurements are critical to project planning and safety. This role often involves irregular hours or shift work due to the nature of mining, tunneling, or infrastructure projects, but it can also offer strong opportunities for career advancement and specialization in geotechnical or infrastructure surveying.

Mine Surveyor - Full Time

Oak Grove

Adger, AL • On-site

Full-time

Posted 8 days ago

Job description

Position Overview:

Oak Grove is hiring for a full-time (non-exempt salaried and non-union) surveyor to join its team supporting mining operations in Adger, Alabama. In this position, you’ll capture accurate survey data throughout the mine workings and turn that data into the plans, maps, and drawings our planning and production teams rely on. The right candidate works well on their own but coordinates smoothly with the broader teams/crew and stays sharp when survey conditions get difficult. Candidates with a strong surface surveying background are encouraged to apply—we’re willing to train the right person on underground methods and conditions.

What You’ll Do:

  • Perform underground surveys of active workings using total stations and related instruments
  • Process and download field data to build and maintain survey plans, maps, and drawings in AutoCAD and comparable software
  • Deliver reliable survey information that drives mine planning, design, development, and production decisions
  • Run check surveys and verify results, flagging any errors or discrepancies promptly
  • Keep accurate records of all survey work and submit reports on schedule
  • Care for and maintain survey equipment
  • Uphold strong safety performance by communicating clearly, monitoring conditions, and refining standard work procedures as needed
  • Follow all State and Federal safety regulations along with Company safety policies and guidelines
  • Work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as the schedule requires

What You’ll Need:

  • Experience in surveying, ideally in underground coal; qualified surface surveyors will be considered and trained for underground work
  • Working knowledge of surveying methods, instruments, and software, including total stations and AutoCAD
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and to think through complex or non-routine survey situations
  • Commitment to following all applicable State, Federal, and Company safety rules

Physical and Environmental Demands:

The work happens underground in a confined environment, so candidates should be able to:

  • Stand for extended periods on uneven, rocky ground
  • Sit up to 4 hours operating equipment or vehicles, and walk up to 4 hours at a time
  • Move through mine sections with varying clearance and headroom, bending or stooping throughout the shift where mine height requires it
  • Climb stairs, ladders, and equipment
  • Frequently lift 25–50 lbs., and occasionally up to 75 lbs.
  • Tolerate extreme conditions, including changing weather, dust, mud, noise ranging from low to high, alternating light and dark, artificial lighting, and tight work areas
  • Perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (pushing, pulling, twisting, handling) with good reflexes and hand-eye coordination

Compensation:  Commensurate with experience level, with an average base pay range of $40 to $50 per hour equivalent non-exempt salary.

Benefits:  The benefits package for Oak Grove is very good, and this position will be eligible for all full-time benefits as may be applicable per company and carrier enrollment requirements.

Candidates qualified and interested in this position should submit their resume by no later than September 10, 2026.
