Job description

JOB TITLE: Fiber Underground Crew Lead

STATUS: Full Time, Employee

RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE: Experience required.  1+ years preferred.

Reports To: Fiber Construction Manager


JOB SUMMARY: The Underground Crew Lead will be responsible for organizing and supervising the safe daily operations of utility construction projects. Manage the field operations with a focus to safety, compliance, efficiency, cost management and innovation. Manage construction activities to ensure Company procedures are followed and compliance is maintained relative to all applicable local, state, and federal regulatory requirements.


TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise the daily operations in accordance with job specifications and customer requirements while continually monitoring site for changing safety conditions and related issues.
  • Monitor progress of crew to ensure satisfactory job completion, keeping construction progress in line with overall project schedule and cost estimate.
  • Develop and maintain business relationships including attending customer progress meetings and pre-bid meetings, when appropriate.
  • Serve as single point of contact with customers, inspectors, subcontractors, and vendors performing work in the field.
  • Pre-survey job location and ensure locates have been performed.
  • Conduct job hazard analysis and present daily/weekly toolbox talks.
  • Manage and develop labor and employee relations.
  • Secure work site at the end of each shift to ensure public safety and safety of equipment and materials.
  • Enforce safety by modeling behaviors, maintaining a drug free work environment, and performing corrective action when appropriate.
  • Train crew members in accordance with Company safety practices.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:

  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work. 
  • Must be willing to travel up to 1 week at a time and able to work within a non-structured schedule i.e., long hours, weekends, 24x7 emergency coverage, etc. 
  • Self motivated and able to learn quickly. 
  • Team oriented and had exemplary character.
  • Able to mentor less experienced team members as appropriate.
  • Safety focused.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS:

  • Able to read prints and other engineering documentation.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Mechanically inclined and detail oriented.
  • Must have valid Drivers License and the ability to obtain a DOT physical certification. Class A CDL Preferred. 
  • Experience operating Mini excavators, backhoes, cable jets, and Capstans. 
  • Ability to assign and supervise work tasks, provide instruction, and inspire confidence to motivate crew to safety, efficiency, and quality on all assigned projects.  
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen, and successfully complete all other pre-employment requirements.
