Job description

Fire Boss
JOB LOCATION: Canyon Fuel Company - Skyline Mine
Position Summary
The Fire Boss is responsible for conducting examinations of assigned underground continuous miner sections to ensure compliance with company policies, state and federal regulations, and safe mining practices. This position plays a critical role in maintaining a safe work environment by identifying and reporting hazards, monitoring ventilation conditions, and ensuring sections are safe for production and maintenance activities. The Fire Boss may be assigned to either a production shift or downshift position and works closely with mine management and hourly employees to support safe and efficient operations.
Essential Responsibilities
• Conduct required pre-shift, on-shift, and other examinations in accordance with MSHA regulations and company policies.
• Examine working sections, travelways, escapeways, ventilation controls, and other designated areas for hazardous conditions.
• Monitor methane, oxygen levels, airflow, and other environmental conditions underground.
• Identify, document, and communicate safety concerns, hazards, and corrective actions.
• Ensure compliance with all company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain accurate examination records and required documentation.
• Communicate section conditions and operational issues to supervisors and incoming shifts.
• Assist with accident prevention efforts through observation, reporting, and employee interaction.
• Work effectively with production, maintenance, and management personnel to support mine operations.
• Promote a positive safety culture and commitment to continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
• Current Utah Fire Boss Certification (or ability to obtain/maintain certification as required).
• Previous experience working as a Fire Boss in an underground coal mining operation.
• Strong knowledge of underground coal mining methods, ventilation systems, and MSHA regulations.
• Ability to recognize and evaluate hazardous conditions underground.
• Strong communication, organizational, and recordkeeping skills.
• Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed.
• Ability to work safely and effectively in an underground mining environment.
Work Schedule
• Hourly position.
• Five (5) days per week, eight (8) hour shifts.
• Two-week rotating schedule between day shift, swing shift, and graveyard shift.
• Position may be assigned to either a production crew or downshift crew based on operational needs.
