Job description

This is a full-time, in-person position based at Goodwill Headquarters in San Jose, CA.
Summary
Founded in Santa Clara County in 1928, Goodwill of Silicon is dedicated to improving employment opportunities, increasing standards of living, providing economic independence, and restoring our clients' sense of self-worth. We achieve this through workforce creation, vocational training, and environmental stewardship. With 18 retail stores, an online store, an extensive reuse/recycling operation, and our Contract Services division, we help individuals overcome barriers to employment, build sustainable lives and communities.
Job Responsibilities
  • Conduct Loss Prevention and Safety audits as well as surveillance of donation stations, retail stores and headquarters.
  • Open and secure Goodwill buildings by activating and deactivating building alarms.
  • Observe incoming and outgoing personnel to ensure no unauthorized items are taken out or brought into the building.
  • Make random inspections of lunch boxes, purses, aprons, vehicles, etc., when requested.
  • Patrol Retail Stores as assigned.
  • Control Headquarters and Building B parking lot area.
  • Maintain logs/audits for shifts completed at stores and submits to manager.
  • Notify local Law Enforcement when apprehensions are made.
  • Assist with Safety, identifying safety hazards and taking corrective action during patrols.
  • Prepare and submit reports on security or safety items as required.
  • Respond to notifications by police or fire departments should an emergency exist at any of our locations.
  • Investigate and report on any Goodwill property that has been damaged, stolen, vandalized, etc.
  • Follow and enforce all company policies and procedures.
  • This position primarily follows a swing shift schedule, occasional night-time shifts may be required to support operational coverage, special events, or emergency response.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

Required Qualifications/Experience
  • High School Diploma
  • Previous Loss Prevention/Security and/or Safety experience.
  • Ability to observe minute details and procedure well written detailed reports.
  • Excellent verbal communication and written skills.
  • Ability to deal with crisis situations in a positive, low-key manner.
  • Able to set priorities and manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to interface effectively across all levels and departments.
  • Knowledge of the use of basic IT for communications and documentation.
  • Valid California driver's license.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Possess a valid BSIS Guard Card.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience
  • Bilingual English/Spanish fluency

Equipment Used
  • Computer, phone, copier, two-way radios, and handcuffs

Aptitudes/skills/temperament
  • Ability to speak and understand English. Bilingual in Spanish desired.
  • Basic understanding of theft/larceny laws including 490.5 PC (Merchant's Privilege)
  • Ability to drive to and from the 18 retail stores, 3 ADS sites and 3 trailer sites.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic operations quickly and accurately.
  • General learning ability. The ability to "catch on" or understand instructions and their underlying principles. The ability to reason and make judgments.
  • Ability to perceive pertinent details in objects or in pictorial or graphic material; to make visual comparisons and discriminations and see slight differences in shapes, shading of figures and width and lengths of lines.
  • Ability to perceive pertinent detail in verbal or tabular material; to observe differences in copy, to proofread words and numbers, and to avoid perceptual error in arithmetic computation.
  • Being able to keep calm and collected in unusual or dangerous situations and to work under adverse conditions if necessary.
  • Being respectful of and conform with set limits, tolerances, and standards.
  • Ability to use hands to place and turn objects easily and precisely.
  • Ability to move eyes, hands, and fingers rapidly, accurately and precisely.
  • Ability to search and review video surveillance footage to conduct investigations.
  • Assist with the installation and servicing of video surveillance equipment.

Working Conditions
The job is performed both indoors in a climatically controlled environment and outdoors. Work is completed in cooperation with co-workers. There is occasional contact with the public. The position requires periodic supervision.
Physical Requirements
The job involves medium work lifting no more than 50 lbs and frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing 25 lbs. Responsibilities may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally either orally or in writing.
