Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The School of Education is an academic unit reporting to the Provost. The School is a major center of research, teaching, and public service within the State of North Carolina, the nation, and the world. The School offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate programs. The mission of the School of Education is to conduct research, and generate basic and applied knowledge about human development, educational technology and entrepreneurship, teaching and learning, school counseling, school psychology, administration, as well as educational policy and leadership; prepare leaders in the profession of education by conducting outstanding research, teaching, and service; and assist in the development of strong and effective public schools in North Carolina. In order to fulfill its mission, the School is organized into three academic divisions: (1) Culture, Curriculum, & Teacher Education (CCATE), (2) Learning, Development & Psychological Sciences (LDPS), and (3) Educational Policy, Organization, & Leadership (EPOL).
Position Summary
This position is associated with an NSF-funded projects related to socio-scientific issues-based teaching and assessment. The project involves design, implementation, and research on issues-based curriculum for middle school science. This project will create multiple opportunities for research including explorations of 1) how students learn and develop attitudes about science as they interact with issues-based curricula, 2) how teachers implement issues-based curriculum, and 4) how to design and implement innovative assessments for SSI teaching and learning. The individual hired in this position will be expected to contribute to engage in data analysis, design of curriculum and assessment materials, and disseminate findings through publications. This person will join a dynamic team of science education researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and work with project collaborators at multiple institutions. Because the position is tied to a specific project, it is a one-year appointment.

Ph.D. in science education or a closely related field
