Job Description

SUMMARY

Under administrative leadership, it is the responsibility of part time faculty to perform tasks which support advancement of the visions, missions, and values of the colleges and District. Part time faculty have responsibilities in regards to their classroom assignment, evaluation of students, curriculum, student advising, professional development, and any assignment-specific needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition OR
  • Bachelor's in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition AND Master's in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism OR
  • The equivalent.

Cuyamaca College - El Cajon, California

Cuyamaca College invites applications for a part-time faculty member to teach English Umoja and serve as faculty co-coordinator for the Umoja program, starting fall 2026.

Umoja is a nationally recognized learning community that centers Black and African American students' cultural knowledge and experiences through integrated writing and counseling to support success, transfer, and leadership development. Umoja is open to all students interested in centering the history and cultural knowledge related to the Black and African Diaspora, broadly conceived.

We are seeking an equity-minded educator who is deeply committed to culturally responsive, relationship-centered teaching, coordinating, and mentorship.

General Responsibilities:

1. Umoja Program Teaching

Teach sheltered English composition sections (C1000 in fall and C1001 in spring) within the Umoja cohort model and design culturally responsive curriculum grounded experiences, histories, topics related to the Black and African Diaspora. Currently, those classes are scheduled on campus at Cuyamaca College on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

2. Umoja Co-Coordinating

Co-coordinate the Umoja program in collaboration with counseling faculty through recruitment, events, mentorship, and collaboration with counseling faculty. Co-coordination is a fully supported and paid per agreement between the English and Counseling.

3. Equity & Student Success

Demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of the College, including IDEAA principles and equitable access, retention, and success for diverse student populations.
