Job description

About Coach Across America

Founded in 2010, Coach Across America is a national service organization focused on the power of coaches to transform the lives of our nation's most vulnerable youth, and the communities they live in, through sports. Coach Across America partners with local nonprofits, schools, and sports organizations to support and train AmeriCorps coaches for a one-year service term in underserved communities.

What You'll Do

As a Coach Across America AmeriCorps member, you will serve at the Washington Area Frisbee Club (WAFC), a youth and adult sports organization whose values center on belonging, access, equity, and growth. WAFC operates year-round Ultimate Frisbee programming across the DC metro area, including league play, tournaments, competitive travel teams, summer camp, free clinics for girl-matching players, and new partnerships with local community organizations. You will receive sports-based youth development training to positively impact youth mental and physical well-being, and serve across multiple programs reaching approximately 80-100 youth ages 6 to 17. You will collaborate with WAFC staff and partner organization staff to lead skill clinics, facilitate practices, and mentor players throughout the service term.

AmeriCorps Service Term: Half-time role (900 hours to complete between August 2026 and August 2027)

Living Allowance: $12,150.00 (total, paid biweekly)

Education Award: $3,697.50 (upon successful completion of service hours)

Expected Hours Per Week: Approximately 16 hours per week during the school year (September through May), increasing to approximately 30 hours per week during the summer months (June through August)

Primary Locations: Service takes place at multiple indoor and outdoor sites across the DC metro area, including Trinity Washington University (DC), Fields at RFK (DC), King Greenleaf Recreation Center (SW DC), Sligo Middle School (Silver Spring, MD), and North Four Corners (MD). Travel time between service sites during programming is counted as service hours; commuting time to and from home is not.

Coach Role and Responsibilities

The CAA coach will serve across WAFC's youth programming portfolio, leading skill development sessions, facilitating practices and games, and mentoring players individually alongside lead coaches. Responsibilities will include:

Direct Youth Service and Curriculum Development

  • Lead skill clinics, practices, and game play for youth participants across WAFC's programs, including the Middle School League, High School Indoor League, Youth Club, Summer Camp, and Girl-Matching Clinic Series, serving youth ages 6 to 17 at indoor and outdoor sites across the DC metro area
  • Facilitate weekly introductory Ultimate Frisbee sessions at King Greenleaf Recreation Center in partnership with GOODProjects, serving 20 to 30 middle and early high school students from the surrounding Ward 6 and Ward 7 neighborhood
  • Assist with coaching at one or more of WAFC's school sponsored teams at middle and high schools across the DMV.
  • Support and encourage the growth and development of girl-matching players across all programs.
  • Mentor players individually, providing feedback on athletic development and life skills using a trauma-sensitive, sports-based youth development approach
  • Develop and refine curriculum and practice plans for use across WAFC programs
  • Support the development of new community partnerships and after-school programming sites in underserved areas of the DMV
  • Track and monitor program metrics, including all data collection activities directed by the CAA Program Director

Community and Role Model Responsibilities

  • Encourage participants to develop life skills, character, and self-management through sport, drawing on lessons from CAA's sports-based youth development training
  • Act as a role model, building trust and respect with youth, families, partner organization staff, and the broader community
  • Recruit and coordinate volunteers to support AmeriCorps National Days of Service and WAFC program events

Up to 20% of service hours may be dedicated to CAA and WAFC training and professional development activities.

Anticipated Service Schedule

The CAA coach will be expected to serve non-traditional hours when programming requires, including weekday evenings outside of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and some weekend hours. A service schedule will be set in advance and updated as needed in collaboration between WAFC and the coach.

Sample Programming Schedule

  • League Play (Fall, Winter, Spring): Middle and high school leagues are held on weekends, typically in 2-hour blocks on Saturdays and/or Sundays (late morning or early afternoon) at fields in DC and Maryland.
  • School & Community-Based Programs (Year-Round): Afterschool, school team, and partner organization programming varies. Examples include GOODProjects Afterschool Program (Tuesdays, 5:30-6:30 p.m.) and school team practices (usually twice weekly for 2 hours per session).
  • Camps (Summer - more intensive schedule): Multiple camp programs are offered throughout the summer, including:
    • GOODProjects Summer Camp (8 weeks; Tuesdays, 10:00-11:00 a.m. at King Greenleaf Rec Center)
    • WINNERS Lacrosse Summer Camp (5 weeks; Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at RFK Fields)
    • Beacon House Summer Camp (5 weeks; Wednesdays, 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Edgewood Rec Center)
    • WAFC Summer Day Camp (3 weeks; Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at Trinity Washington)
  • Clinics & Special Events (Fall, Spring, and Summer): Girl-matching clinics and community events are offered throughout the year. Clinics are typically 2-hour sessions held at locations across DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Special events include the WAFC Day of Play, held on a Sunday in the fall for 4 hours in DC.
  • Note: The above is a sample schedule based on WAFC's current coaching needs. It may change as these needs evolve.

Additional AmeriCorps Requirements

Coach Across America AmeriCorps coaches must complete the following to ensure successful completion of the program:

  • Completion of the minimum required 900 hours of service and training by the last day of the coach contract
  • Attendance at the CAA Coach Orientation at the start of the service term
  • Submission of accurate bi-weekly timesheets, approved by the Host Site Supervisor
  • Participation in AmeriCorps National Days of Service and community events
  • Attendance at all CAA trainings, communities of learning, and special initiatives
  • Completion of all data collection activities as directed by the CAA Program Director, including youth rosters, attendance records, and participant surveys

Uniform Policy

Coaches must wear Coach Across America branded gear provided by CAA, including items bearing the AmeriCorps logo, during all direct service sessions and program events. Coaches will also wear WAFC-branded items as provided.

Eligibility and Qualifications

Required:

  • U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident
  • 18 years of age or older (17 with written parental/guardian consent)
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, or currently working toward one
  • Demonstrated disc sport throwing proficiency, including backhand and forehand throws
  • Experience playing, coaching, or teaching Ultimate Frisbee or a comparable team sport
  • Demonstrated interest in youth development, mentorship, or community-based programming
  • Strong verbal communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to serve independently and as part of a team across multiple sites and program contexts
  • Ability to travel between service sites across the DC metro area using personal transportation or public transit (commuting time from home is not counted as service hours)
  • Must pass a criminal history background check

Coach Across America AmeriCorps members are as diverse a group as the communities we serve. We're looking for you if you want to build yourself, give back, and are ready to change the world through the power of sports.
