Ul508A Panel information

What is a UL508A panel?

A UL508A panel is an industrial control panel that has been designed, built, and labeled according to the UL508A standard set by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). This standard ensures that the panel meets safety, wiring, and construction requirements for controlling electrical equipment in industrial environments. UL508A certification indicates that the panel has been inspected and approved by UL, providing assurance of quality and safety for manufacturers and end users. These panels are commonly used in automation systems, machinery, and process control applications. Choosing a UL508A certified panel can help with code compliance and reduce liability risks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UL508A panel builder, and why are they important?

To excel as a UL508A Panel Builder, you need expertise in electrical wiring, schematic reading, and a thorough understanding of UL508A standards, typically backed by relevant technical education or apprenticeship. Familiarity with tools like multimeters, wire strippers, and CAD software, as well as knowledge of industry certifications such as OSHA safety training, is important. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the safe, compliant, and efficient assembly of industrial control panels critical to various automated systems.

What are some common challenges faced by UL508A panel builders and how can they be addressed?

UL 508A Panel Builders often face challenges such as interpreting complex electrical schematics, ensuring compliance with strict safety standards, and managing tight project deadlines. Staying up-to-date with the latest UL 508A standards and thorough documentation helps maintain compliance and quality. Strong collaboration with design engineers, electricians, and quality assurance teams is essential for troubleshooting design or wiring issues and ensuring efficient project delivery. Adopting effective project management and regular training can further minimize errors and streamline the panel building process.

What is the difference between Ul508A Panel vs Electrician?

AspectUl508A PanelElectrician
CertificationsUL508A certification, electrical licensingElectrical license, possibly UL certification for certain tasks
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, panel assembly, industrial settingsConstruction sites, maintenance, residential/commercial wiring
Job FocusDesign, building, and testing control panelsInstalling, repairing, and maintaining electrical systems

While both Ul508A Panel builders and electricians work with electrical systems, Ul508A Panel professionals focus on designing and assembling control panels compliant with UL standards, often in manufacturing environments. Electricians handle a broader range of electrical installations and repairs across various settings. Understanding these differences helps clarify the specific skills and certifications required for each role.

Job description

Panel Builder / Control Panel Technician

Adenus Technologies is hiring a Panel Builder / Control Panel Technician to build industrial electrical control panels at our Smyrna, Tennessee facility.

This is a shop-based role focused on fabricating, assembling, wiring, and testing control panels. We are looking for someone with hands-on panel-building experience who can read electrical schematics, follow shop standards, and produce clean, organized, high-quality work.

What You’ll Do
  • Build and wire industrial electrical control panels from schematics, panel layouts, bills of material, and shop standards.
  • Mount and wire common control panel components including wire duct, DIN rail, terminal blocks, breakers, fuses, power supplies, relays, PLC hardware, HMIs, VFDs, transformers, disconnects, and communication devices.
  • Drill, tap, cut, and modify back panels and enclosures as needed.
  • Route, bundle, label, and terminate wiring neatly and consistently.
  • Verify wire labels, terminal labels, component tags, fuse sizes, breaker sizes, wire colors, wire gauges, and component ratings.
  • Install and verify grounding, bonding, jumpers, field terminals, communication cables, and control-power wiring.
  • Build panels in accordance with UL508A requirements and internal quality standards.
  • Perform basic QC checks including pull checks, visual inspections, continuity checks, voltage checks, and first power-up support.
  • Identify and communicate drawing issues, missing materials, incorrect parts, or build concerns.
Required Qualifications
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience building and wiring industrial electrical control panels.
  • Ability to read and follow electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and bills of material.
  • Experience with proper wire routing, labeling, stripping, crimping, ferrules/lugs, and terminal connections.
  • Familiarity with UL508A panel-building practices or experience working in a quality-focused panel shop.
  • Ability to use common panel-shop tools including hand tools, power tools, and multimeters.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to clean, consistent workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with engineering, production, and management.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with PLC hardware, HMIs, VFDs, motor starters, relays, power supplies, Ethernet devices, and industrial control components.
  • Experience with panel QC, continuity testing, voltage checks, I/O checkout, or first power-up procedures.
  • Familiarity with SCCR labels, panel nameplates, warning labels, and electrical documentation.
Physical and Work Requirements
  • Ability to stand, bend, reach, and work inside control panels for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move tools, materials, and panel components safely.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools and power tools.
  • Ability to work in a shop environment with a focus on quality, safety, and consistency.

You should be proficient in:
