Ul508A Panel information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UL508A panel builder, and why are they important?

To excel as a UL508A Panel Builder, you need expertise in electrical wiring, schematic reading, and a thorough understanding of UL508A standards, typically backed by relevant technical education or apprenticeship. Familiarity with tools like multimeters, wire strippers, and CAD software, as well as knowledge of industry certifications such as OSHA safety training, is important. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the safe, compliant, and efficient assembly of industrial control panels critical to various automated systems.

What are some common challenges faced by UL508A panel builders and how can they be addressed?

UL 508A Panel Builders often face challenges such as interpreting complex electrical schematics, ensuring compliance with strict safety standards, and managing tight project deadlines. Staying up-to-date with the latest UL 508A standards and thorough documentation helps maintain compliance and quality. Strong collaboration with design engineers, electricians, and quality assurance teams is essential for troubleshooting design or wiring issues and ensuring efficient project delivery. Adopting effective project management and regular training can further minimize errors and streamline the panel building process.

What is the difference between Ul508A Panel vs Electrician?

AspectUl508A PanelElectrician
CertificationsUL508A certification, electrical licensingElectrical license, possibly UL certification for certain tasks
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, panel assembly, industrial settingsConstruction sites, maintenance, residential/commercial wiring
Job FocusDesign, building, and testing control panelsInstalling, repairing, and maintaining electrical systems

While both Ul508A Panel builders and electricians work with electrical systems, Ul508A Panel professionals focus on designing and assembling control panels compliant with UL standards, often in manufacturing environments. Electricians handle a broader range of electrical installations and repairs across various settings. Understanding these differences helps clarify the specific skills and certifications required for each role.

What is a UL508A panel?

A UL508A panel is an industrial control panel that has been designed, built, and labeled according to the UL508A standard set by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). This standard ensures that the panel meets safety, wiring, and construction requirements for controlling electrical equipment in industrial environments. UL508A certification indicates that the panel has been inspected and approved by UL, providing assurance of quality and safety for manufacturers and end users. These panels are commonly used in automation systems, machinery, and process control applications. Choosing a UL508A certified panel can help with code compliance and reduce liability risks.

Project Executive - Industrial Controls

Felix Construction

Phoenix, AZ โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Posted 26 days ago

Job description

Felix Construction has been building critical water and wastewater infrastructure since 1987, proudly serving the Phoenix and Dallas markets. We’ve kept the close, family-owned feel of our early days while earning the reputation and recognition of a leading general contractor.

Our projects are local, so you don’t live out of a suitcase — you live your life. This commitment to our team and values has earned us recognition as the #1 Top Workplace in Arizona and the #2 Top Workplace in the USA for midsize business in construction from USA Today/AZcentral.com.

And here’s what truly sets us apart: Felix is the only General Contractor in Arizona with in-house General Contracting, Electrical, and Industrial Controls UL508A-certified panel shop—all under one roof. We’ve grown into a $200M company with 400+ employee-owners by keeping it simple: work hard, work safe, and do it right.

We Build What Matters.

The Industrial Controls Project Executive owns the people, performance, and P&L health of the Industrial Controls Group's project portfolio. You are the operational leader who ensures our design teams, UL508A panel fabrication shop, and field integration crews deliver world-class control systems — safely, on schedule, and at or above budgeted margin.

You will lead across the full project lifecycle: from proposal support and design release, through panel fabrication and factory acceptance testing (FAT), to site acceptance testing (SAT), commissioning, and warranty. You collaborate daily with end-users, engineers, designers, project managers, and panel fabricators, and you serve as the escalation point for client and commercial issues.

This role reports directly to the Director of Industrial Automation and Controls and is a key leadership seat within the Industrial Controls Group, with a scorecard that cascades from the enterprise COO operating pillars. This is an onsite role: 5 days a week at the Felix office in Phoenix, AZ.

What You'll Do

Leadership & People

  • Manage, supervise, and develop department personnel across design and manufacturing teams; build a productive, accountable work environment.
  • Provide mentorship, structured coaching, and career-path development; maintain a documented succession plan for every key seat in the group.
  • Hire departmental staff in partnership with the HR Talent Acquisition group; own time-to-fill and quality-of-hire for the group.
  • Delegate responsibilities with clear ownership and follow up to successful completion.

Operational Execution

  • Ensure all projects are delivered on budget and on schedule; own monthly project reviews, earned-value tracking, and margin forecasting for the group's portfolio.
  • Track and publish performance metrics for the design team and manufacturing team; drive labor utilization and panel shop throughput targets.
  • Own resource planning: maintain a rolling 12-month staffing and shop-capacity plan aligned to backlog and pipeline.
  • Enforce disciplined change management — all scope changes priced, approved, and documented before work is performed.

Client & Commercial

  • Interface with internal and external clients to resolve issues; serve as the executive escalation point and own client-relationship health for the group.
  • Support proposal development, estimating reviews, and go/no-go decisions with operational and capacity input.
  • Partner with business development to convert delivery excellence into repeat work and negotiated backlog.

Quality, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all panel fabrication complies with UL508A standards and applicable codes (NFPA 70, NFPA 79); maintain command of electrical drawings, control schematics, and engineering specifications.
  • Own FAT/SAT quality gates: zero panels ship without documented, passing factory acceptance testing.
  • Model and enforce Felix safety guidelines; ensure corrective actions are assigned, tracked, and closed within 48 hours; drive documented weekly safety observations and toolbox talks.

Technology & Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain and advance the group's technology standards — PLC/HMI/SCADA platforms, panel design libraries, and documentation templates — to reduce engineering cycle time and rework.
  • Drive continuous improvement in job processes, shop workflow, and cost; standardize what works and eliminate what doesn't.
Who You Are

Required

  • 4-year degree in engineering, project management, or construction management — or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years of management experience in industrial electrical controls, automation, UL508A panel shop, or manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of electrical drawings, control schematics, engineering specifications, and the UL508A fabrication process.
  • Demonstrated P&L or budget accountability with a track record of on-time, on-budget delivery.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Project, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; proven ability to lead teams and work collaboratively to meet shared objectives.
  • Initiative, attention to detail, positive attitude, and the ability to work autonomously.
  • Legal right to work in the U.S. without sponsorship indefinitely; valid driver's license with a good driving record; pre-employment drug screen.

Preferred

  • Water/wastewater or municipal infrastructure controls experience (SCADA, instrumentation, pump station and treatment plant automation).
  • Familiarity with Allen-Bradley and/or Modicon PLC and HMI platforms and industrial networking (Ethernet/IP, Modbus).
  • Experience leading FAT/SAT programs, commissioning, and startup in an integrator or design-build environment.
  • PMP or equivalent project leadership credential.
