Job description

Academic Hospital Medicine Faculty (ZSFG)

The UCSF Division of Hospital Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) invites outstanding hospital medicine physicians to join our faculty. We seek clinically excellent mission-driven physicians at all levels of experience who thrive in an academic safety-net environment and are eager to contribute to scholarship, teaching, and health system improvement while delivering outstanding care to our patient population.

ZSFG serves as San Francisco's safety-net hospital, providing care to patients with complex medical, social, and structural challenges. Faculty in this role will be integral to teaching the next generation of UCSF-trained physicians, and advancing scholarship that enhances patient care, health systems, and/or health policy.

We offer four clinical tracks, providing flexibility to align your clinical and academic interests:

  • Predominantly Days: Engage deeply in scholarship—including clinical excellence, medical education, quality improvement, systems-based improvements—and leadership roles.
  • Hybrid: A balance of day and night shifts with flexibility for academic and leadership opportunities.
  • Predominantly Nights: Dedicated nocturnist positions with unique mentored opportunities to develop and grow scholarship interests and skills.
  • Addiction Medicine & Hospital Medicine Hybrid: blend of hospital medicine & addiction medicine clinical roles.
  • Palliative Care & Hospital Medicine Hybrid: blend of hospital medicine & palliative care clinical roles.

Why UCSF at ZSFG?

  • Clinical Excellence in an Academic Setting – Join mission-driven faculty where outstanding clinical skills are the foundation of effective teaching, mentorship, and scholarship.
  • Opportunities for Leadership & Innovation – Work with leaders in hospital medicine, health systems innovation, and medical education to improve care delivery and patient safety.
  • Mentorship & Career Growth – Faculty benefit from structured mentorship, access to UCSF's world-class academic resources, and opportunities to develop expertise in quality improvement, data-driven operations, and education.
  • Complex Clinical Practice – Care for patients with high-acuity conditions and unique social determinants of health, making clinical excellence and adaptability essential.

Who We're Looking For Requirements:

  • Clinically outstanding board-certified or board-eligible internists who thrive in an academic hospital medicine environment.
  • Deep commitment to delivering exceptional care in a safety-net setting.
  • Passion for teaching, mentorship, and the pursuit of scholarship that advances hospital-based care.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to delivering exceptional patient care while advancing UCSF's mission of improving health worldwide through outstanding clinical practice, education, and scholarly contributions in hospital medicine.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and evidence-based practice.

Preferred/Desirable Qualifications (optional):

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish or Cantonese (native-level fluency)
  • Track record of excellence in clinical care, medical education, or systems-based scholarship
  • Strong communication skills, including empathy, humility, and respect for differing viewpoints
  • Experience working with underserved populations and navigating complex care environments
  • Ability to thrive in dynamic hospital settings and work collaboratively
  • Interest or experience in improving systems of care through quality, safety, education, research, innovation, or operational leadership
  • Board certification in addiction medicine or palliative care for candidates interested in those tracks

For physicians primarily seeking a clinical role without formal teaching or scholarly expectations, or with flexibility in clinical hours, we invite you to explore our Medical Staff Physician – Hospital Medicine position, which offers the opportunity to flexibly practice high-acuity inpatient medicine in a mission-driven, academic setting at ZSFG.
