Position description
The Department Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE) at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) invites applications for the position of Continuing Educator III.
Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE), formerly known as UCSB Extension, has served the community for more than 75 years, extending teaching mission of UC Santa Barbara beyond the campus. Over the past decade, PaCE has enrolled more than 20,000 students and community members. PaCE is a self-supporting unit with more than 20 FTEs, over 100 instructors, and an annual budget approaching $10 million. The division offers approximately 200 courses with more than 7,500 enrollments annually, and its International Programs serve over 500 students each year. PaCE provides certificate programs and professional development for UC Santa Barbara students; lifelong learning opportunities for professional growth; career-oriented training aligned with current workforce needs; and educational offerings for pre-college and non-matriculated students. In addition, PaCE designs and delivers customized employee training programs for companies, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.
The PaCE Associate Dean (Continuing Educator III) is responsible for independent administration, management, development and coordination of all academic programs offered by PaCE. As a member of the executive leadership team, this role plays a critical part in shaping Extension's program growth and development strategy while overseeing a diverse portfolio of educational offerings that serve the needs of Santa Barbara, California, and beyond. The Associate Dean serves as PaCE's primary community liaison on- and off- campus, including peer Extensions.
Duties Include:
Set the strategic directions of the organization such as (but not limited to):
  • The mission and vision of PaCE/Extension and accompanying strategic planning and execution.
  • Cultivating relations with various campus academic and administrative departments, and collaboratively designing and implementing initiatives for the betterment of the UCSB community.
  • Cultivate relations and identify development opportunities with the community, City and County Offices, public officers, and other educational institutions with the goal of entrenching Professional and Continuing Education's (PaCE) role as a training partner in local workforce development.

Serve as PaCE's primary community liaison on- and off-campus.
  • Foster relationships with the deans, chairs, and business officers of appropriate UCSB departments to arrive at mutually agreeable revenue share arrangements and secure seats for PaCE students.
  • Supervise the development of partnerships with partner institutions and agencies to ensure the enrollment in and growth of various programs.
  • Oversee the launching of new partnerships educational institutions to offer joint certificates and programs.
  • Coordinate the resources so that PaCE can serve as a liaison to local workforce development organizations for developing programs for job market re-entry.
  • Represent UCSB PaCE in the UEC Deans meetings. Participate / Contribute in various joint UC Extensions initiatives on behalf of UCSB PaCE.
  • Maintain contact with Deans, Associate Deans and other key administrators in other UC Extensions

Oversee and ensure continual and diversified growth of the PaCE Programs.
  • Oversee curriculum design, program budget development, pricing strategies, and instructor recruitment for all PaCE programs.
  • Manage all support staff and academic employees for all PaCE programs such as program managers and continuing educators to ensure the proper functioning of PaCE programs according to the internal business procedures and external protocols.
  • Continuous improvement in the quality of PaCE program content by overseeing instructional / curriculum development, instructor quality, and mode of delivery.
  • Maintain the relevance of program content as well as delivery mechanisms in response to changing workplace and professional development needs.
  • Work closely with the Chief Operating Officer to develop new marketing and customer service strategies to ensure diverse, yet targeted outreach and implement improvements for daily operational processes. This includes, but is not limited to, exploring and establishing innovative sales, marketing, and customer relationship mechanisms, data management mechanisms, and resource management.

This position is not remote. On-site presence will be required on at least a hybrid basis (2 days per week, in-office), depending on departmental and organizational needs.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • PhD or terminal degree in related area
  • 5 years minimum of leadership/management experience in a higher education institution or a similarly complex organization, as well as oversight of academic / continuing education program(s)

Preferred qualifications
  • Proven ability to design and manage creative continuing education programs within an entrepreneurial framework, responsive to evolving market needs.
  • Highly advanced experience planning and executing complex projects or events within large organizations, with strong organizational and coordination skills.
  • Sophistication in educational administration, instructional design, and teaching/training; experience in developing programs for diverse audiences.
  • Experience managing academic and administrative staff, including hiring, mentoring, and performance management in a collaborative environment.
  • Exceptional ability to lead cross-functional teams using influence rather than authority, fostering effective internal and external relationships.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including experience in report writing, proposals, and business correspondence.
  • Strong computer literacy and comfort working in an electronic office environment.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the university system or experience in academic or public service nonprofit settings.
  • Demonstrated and strong ability to set priorities, solve problems creatively, make decisions, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work effectively with academic administrators, campus faculty, and UCSB Extension instructors.
  • Familiarity with the Santa Barbara region and its development potential; experience with executive, managerial, and international education audiences
  • Demonstrated understanding of online learning formats and distance education methods for adult learners
