Job description

Overview

Terberg YT yard / terminal tractors (4x2) and also called shunt trucks, are widely used by major port operators worldwide. Our terminal tractors are primarily used for transporting various cargoes (container, bulk, breakbulk, shipping containers, oil barrels, gear, or any other materials / cargo) from vessel to storage yard in a responsible, safe and efficient manner. The operator will be responsible for operating terminal tractors and assisting with the loading and discharging of all cargo, within the facility. 

THIS IS NOT AN OVER THE ROAD POSITION.


Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Completion of PIT and vehicle operation training (classroom and practical).
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and understanding of cargo handling and vehicle safety.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work safely in a fast-paced environment.
  • TWIC card required
  • Valid State Drivers License.
  • Reliable transportation and punctuality.
  • One (1) year driving a mule jockey, yard dog, terminal tractor and/or rig driving experience is preferred. 
  • Must have the ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Must have the ability to work independently with limited supervision and strong initiative.
  • Must have the ability to think logically, follow procedures, instructions and make sound
  • Must be able to work flexible hours and extended hours including nights, overtime, weekends and holidays

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

  • Frequent exposure to outdoor conditions, including heat, rain, wind, and humidity.
  • Requires standing, walking, climbing, bending, and operating machinery and vehicles.
  • May involve lifting, carrying, and moving equipment or cargo.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, and moving mechanical parts.
  • Must adhere to all safety protocols and wear appropriate PPE.
  • The employee is continuously required to sit (while driving), grasp and exercise eye-hand coordination and eye hand-foot coordination and finger dexterity.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust to various types of light. 

Responsibilities
  • Operate Internal Transfer Vehicles (ITVs) and yard trucks to move containers and general cargo on flatbed trailers within the terminal.
  • Perform pre-use and daily inspections; follow procedures for checking out and returning trucks.
  • Safely mount and dismount vehicles; use seat belts and operate within safe speed limits.
  • Navigate intersections, blind spots, ramps, grades, and uneven surfaces.
  • Perform coupling and uncoupling procedures with trailers.
  • Properly use air hoses, fifth wheel, and trailer landing gear.
  • Load and secure cargo, including weather-sensitive materials.
  • Maintain awareness of pedestrian, vehicular, and machinery traffic patterns.
  • Operate safely near cranes, overhead hazards, and within crane swing radius.
  • Follow procedures for leaving an unattended truck and comply with all safety protocols.
  • Maintain logs of loads and submit accurate daily shift activity
  • Maintain a clean work area, free of debris or safety hazards and awareness of surroundings {i.e. vehicles, people, equipment, etc.) at all times.
  • Perform other duties such as general labor when assigned by Supervisor.
