Introduction

\r\n\r\n\r\nThe DNREC Shoreline and Waterway Management Section works to maintain and improve Delaware's beaches, shorelines and waterways. \r\n\r\n\r\nClick here for more information about Watershed Stewardship.\r\n

Summary Statement

The Shoreline and Waterway Management Section helps protect and maintain Delaware's waterways by performing dredging, macroalgae harvesting, channel marking, and removing hazards to navigation. This hands-on field position involves transporting materials and equipment with trucks and trailers and operating heavy equipment such as skid steers, front-end loaders, dozers, and marine vessels. Additional duties may include assisting in Shoreline Management and Sand Bypass operations in various capacities. Candidates with basic mechanic, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing skills are encouraged to apply and must be comfortable working on boats and around water in a variety of outdoor conditions as part of a dedicated DNREC field crew based at the Lewes Facility.\r\n

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.\r\n\r\n Applies conservation and preservation principles and practices in support of the management of the state's natural resources which includes such activities as propagating, seeding, transplanting, cultivating, harvesting and care of trees, flowers, shrubs, lawns and crops to include turf/grounds management, pest management, herbicide/fertilizer application, layout and design, assessment of soil composition and environmental conditions.\r\n Performs maintenance and repairs in a variety of labor/trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting, welding, construction, grounds maintenance and assists higher level personnel on large scale projects.\r\n Operates marine, land-based and construction equipment and vehicles. \r\n Maintains and repairs a variety of equipment/vehicles.\r\n Provides information to the public as requested or responds to inquiries regarding agency initiatives/programs.\r\n Ensures the safe usage of state owned, managed, and/or maintained grounds and facilities by the public.\r\n Completes standard forms/applications; maintains records and reports detailing daily activity, tool and equipment inventory, fuel and service logs and related activities. \r\n\r\n

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Conservation Technician IV \r\nApplicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: \r\n \r\nDepartment of Natural Resources and Environmental Control: Field Operations: \r\n\r\n \r\n Three years experience in operating hand power tools and land-based and/or marine-based construction equipment used for grading, excavating, pumping, or dredging. \r\n \r\n \r\n Three years experience in routine maintenance of land and marine construction equipment, light trucks and vessels. \r\n \r\n \r\n Six months experience in waterway management operations such as macro-algae harvesting, navigational channel marking and/or abandon vessel/derelict structure removal. \r\n \r\n \r\n Six months experience in site construction standards and methods to support land and marine activities. \r\n \r\n \r\n Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through course work, academic training, training provided through an employer, or performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others; OR supervising staff which may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others; OR supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees. \r\n \r\n \r\n Possession of a valid CDL Class A OR B Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving). \r\n \r\n\r\n
