Both roles often work outdoors and may require similar certifications, but their job tasks and focus areas differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a turf installer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Turf Installer, you need practical knowledge of landscaping, soil preparation, and turf laying, often supported by experience in grounds maintenance or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as sod cutters, compactors, and irrigation systems, as well as potential certifications in landscaping or turf management, is important. Physical stamina, attention to detail, and strong teamwork skills help individuals excel in this role. These abilities ensure the proper installation, appearance, and longevity of turf, leading to satisfied clients and high-quality outdoor spaces.

What does a typical workday look like for a turf installer, and what kind of teamwork is involved?

A typical day for a Turf Installer involves preparing the ground, measuring and cutting turf to fit the designated area, and installing it with precision. The role often requires collaborating closely with a team, including landscapers, equipment operators, and sometimes project managers, to ensure the installation meets client specifications and quality standards. Communication and coordination are essential, as installers work together to move heavy rolls of turf, operate machinery, and resolve any on-site challenges. The work is physically demanding and usually outdoors, but it offers a sense of accomplishment when a project is completed as a team.

What is a turf installer?

Turf installers are professionals who specialize in laying and installing artificial or natural grass surfaces for lawns, sports fields, playgrounds, and other outdoor spaces. Their work includes site preparation, measuring and cutting turf to fit specific areas, and ensuring proper drainage and stability. Turf installers may also maintain or repair turf surfaces over time to keep them in optimal condition. They often work with landscaping companies, sports facility managers, or directly with homeowners. The job requires knowledge of landscaping techniques, proper use of tools, and attention to detail to ensure a seamless and durable installation.

What does a turf installer do?

As a turf installer, your responsibilities are to install synthetic landscaping for various clients. You might work on sports fields, private residences, or for any other client who wants to replace their grass. Your duties include removing existing materials like soil or weeds, relocating or capping off sprinklers, and installing an artificial lawn. You use various materials and tools to replicate existing grass, but the turf itself is your main piece of equipment. After installation, you also nail down and groom the turf to create an aesthetic landscape. Turf installers typically work with landscaping companies.

Job description

Lone Star Turf is looking for a driven, customer-focused Turf Sales Representative with proven in-home sales experience to join our growing team. This is a field sales role centered on meeting homeowners at their property, building trust, and closing deals on-site. If you know how to walk into a home, read the customer, and earn the sale before you leave the driveway, we want to talk.

What You'll Do

  • Close in-home sales. Run scheduled appointments at homeowners' properties, present our turf solutions, and secure signed agreements on-site whenever possible.
  • Conduct site visits and measurements. Assess each yard, take accurate measurements, and identify project requirements that shape the proposal.
  • Estimate projects accurately. Calculate material, labor, and timeline costs for artificial grass installations, and deliver clean, professional proposals.
  • Follow up relentlessly. Manage multiple estimates and active projects at once without letting anything slip through the cracks.
  • Present proposals proactively. Get proposals in front of clients quickly — speed wins deals.
  • Keep detailed notes. Log every client interaction, preference, and next step so nothing gets lost between the first handshake and the final install.
  • Build long-term relationships. Earn referrals and repeat business by being the kind of rep homeowners recommend to their neighbors.
  • Stay sharp. Know our products, the competition, and where the industry is headed so you can speak with authority in every appointment.

What We're Looking For

  • Proven in-home sales experience is required. We're not looking to train someone on how to sell in a living room — you've done it, you've hit numbers doing it, and you can talk about your close rate.
  • Background in turf, landscaping, home improvement, remodeling, roofing, windows, solar, or similar in-home sales verticals is a strong plus.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport quickly with homeowners.
  • Strong verbal and written communication.
  • Detail-oriented with disciplined record-keeping habits.
  • Self-motivated and comfortable thriving in a commission-only environment.
  • Comfortable with CRM software and basic computer tools (we use Jobber).
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license.

Why Lone Star Turf

Quality products, a reputation for doing the job right, and warm leads from homeowners ready to transform their yards. Bring the sales skills — we'll give you the opportunity.
