Job Description Summary

The Cerebrovascular Program Supervisor reports to the System Program Director for Cerebrovascular Care within the Neuroscience Integrated Center of Clinical Excellence (ICCE) Service Line. This role provides strategic and operational leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based cerebrovascular care across the Charleston Division.
The Program Supervisor is responsible for the planning, coordination, operations, and certification of the Comprehensive Stroke Program, ensuring 24/7 readiness and compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. The supervisor also provides direct leadership, supervision, performance management, and professional development for assigned team members, fostering accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement.
This position promotes a culture of respect, collaboration, accountability for outcomes, and adaptability while partnering across multidisciplinary teams to advance clinical excellence, regulatory compliance, and organizational strategic goals.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

1. Change Management & Leadership

• Provides direct leadership to stroke coordinators, data analysts, and transitional care nurses to support continuous quality improvement in stroke care.
• Works in close collaboration with Cerebrovascular, Neurocritical Care, Emergency Department, and Neuroendovascular Medical Directors.
• Partners with Quality & Safety, Risk Management, Nursing Leadership, and other key stakeholders to implement system-wide stroke initiatives and improvements.

2. Education & Clinical Expertise

• Serves as a subject matter expert in stroke prevention, acute care, rehabilitation, and recovery.
• Leads regulatory preparedness, certification activities, and corrective action plans related to Comprehensive Stroke Program disease-specific care.
• Supports ongoing education for clinical teams through guideline updates, performance feedback, and best practice dissemination.

3. Collaboration & Coordination

• Facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration among physicians, nursing, EMS, ancillary services, and administrative teams to ensure seamless stroke care delivery.
• Coordinates enterprise-wide stroke initiatives to promote standardized, high-quality care across all sites.

4. Care Continuity & Patient Outcomes

• Oversees processes that support care transitions across the continuum, from emergency response through inpatient care, discharge planning, and follow-up.
• Identifies opportunities to improve patient outcomes, reduce variability in care, and enhance patient and family experience.

5. Program Operations & Performance Improvement

• Utilizes quantitative data and qualitative insights to identify performance gaps and lead process improvement initiatives with clearly defined goals and outcomes.
• Monitors compliance with evidence-based guidelines, accreditation standards, and internal performance benchmarks.

6. Program Representation & Community Engagement

• Represents the MUSC Comprehensive Stroke Program at community events, professional meetings, and outreach initiatives.
• Participates in and supports educational opportunities for care teams, patients, families, and the community.

7. Documentation, Reporting & Analytics

• Oversees accurate data collection, reporting, benchmarking, and analysis to support certification requirements, quality improvement, and leadership reporting.
• Ensures timely and effective communication of performance metrics to internal and external stakeholders.

Additional Job Description

Qualifications for Program Director, Cerebrovascular

• Education:
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Alternatively, a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in lieu of a BSN.
• Work Experience:
  • A minimum of five years of experience in nursing, preferably in a clinical setting or neurology unit.
  • Experience in a leadership role with direct reports is preferred.
• Skills & Competencies:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong mentoring, coaching, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative and team-oriented environment, coordinating care across multiple disciplines.
  • Strong ability to lead by example, make independent decisions, while also collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Lean Six Sigma experience preferred
• Licensure & Certifications:
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA-recognized equivalent), or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Healthcare Providers.
  • Current or willingness to obtain Stroke Certified Registered Nurse (SCRN) certification and/or American Heart Association Acute Stroke Life Support (ASLS) certification.
