How much do tube welder jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 21, 2026, the average hourly pay for tube welder in the United States is $24.39, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.67 and $27.16 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a tube welder?

Tube welders are skilled tradespeople who specialize in welding pipes and tubes, often in industries such as construction, manufacturing, power generation, and oil and gas. They use various welding techniques, including TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) and MIG (Metal Inert Gas), to join metal tubes and ensure leak-proof, high-strength welds. Tube welders must read blueprints, follow safety protocols, and inspect their work for quality and compliance. Their expertise is essential for projects involving boilers, pipelines, and structural frameworks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tube welder?

To excel as a Tube Welder, you need proficiency in welding techniques (such as TIG and MIG), blueprint reading, and a solid understanding of metallurgy, often supported by vocational training or welding certifications. Familiarity with welding equipment, pipe alignment tools, and industry safety standards like ASME or AWS certifications is typically required. Strong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and effective problem-solving skills help tube welders produce precise and high-quality welds. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring the structural integrity, safety, and reliability of welded tube systems in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and energy.

What are some common challenges tube welders face on the job, and how can they be addressed?

Tube Welders often encounter challenges such as working in confined spaces, maintaining weld quality on various materials, and meeting strict safety standards. Addressing these challenges typically involves staying up-to-date with proper welding techniques, using appropriate personal protective equipment, and continuously practicing precise welds to meet industry codes. Additionally, Tube Welders benefit from strong communication with team members, especially when coordinating with pipefitters and inspectors to ensure projects run smoothly and meet deadlines.

What is the difference between Tube Welder vs Pipe Fitter?

AspectTube WelderPipe Fitter
CertificationsWelding certifications (e.g., AWS)Welding and pipefitting certifications
Work EnvironmentFabrication shops, manufacturing plantsConstruction sites, industrial plants
Job FocusWelding thin-walled metal tubesInstalling and assembling piping systems
Tools & SkillsWelding equipment, precision cuttingWelding, pipe fitting, blueprint reading

While both Tube Welders and Pipe Fitters work with metal components and require welding skills, Tube Welders specialize in welding thin-walled tubes in manufacturing settings, whereas Pipe Fitters focus on installing and maintaining piping systems in construction and industrial environments. Certifications and tools overlap, but their work environments and primary tasks differ significantly.

How do you become a tube welder?

To become a tube welder, you typically need to complete a high school diploma or equivalent and gain training in welding techniques, often through vocational schools or apprenticeships. Certification in welding, such as the AWS Certified Welder credential, can improve job prospects, and experience with specific tools like TIG or MIG welders is valuable in this field.
