Job description

Laser Machine Operator in sheet metal manufacturing sets up and operates computer-controlled laser cutting systems (such as Amada, Trumpf, or Mazak) to cut, etch, or shape metal sheets with high precision. They are responsible for translating technical specifications into finished metal components while maintaining tight tolerances.

Core Responsibilities

  • Machine Setup: Select and install appropriate lenses and nozzles based on material type and thickness; load cutting programs and adjust laser beam focal points.
  • Material Handling: Load raw sheet metal onto the machine bed using forklifts or overhead cranes and unload completed parts.
  • Production Monitoring: Oversee the cutting process to detect malfunctions, adjust gas levels (e.g., nitrogen or oxygen), and clear alarms or machine errors.
  • Quality Inspection: Use precision tools like calipers, micrometers, and height gauges to verify that parts meet blueprint specifications and GD&T standards.
  • Maintenance: Perform routine cleaning of cutting equipment and dust collectors; troubleshoot minor mechanical issues to prevent downtime.

Key Skills & Qualifications

  • Technical Knowledge: Ability to read complex blueprints and work orders; familiarity with NC code or CAD/CAM nesting software.
  • Experience: Employers typically seek 1–3 years of experience in metal fabrication or CNC machine operation.
  • Physical Stamina: Capacity to stand for 8–10 hours per shift and frequently lift or move up to 50 lbs.

Work Environment

Operators work in fast-paced industrial plants where they are exposed to noise, dust, and fumes. Strict adherence to OSHA safety standards—including the use of hearing protection, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots—is mandatory to prevent injury from laser beams or moving mechanical parts.
