JOB OVERVIEW: TRIMMER/CLIMBER (ALL LEVELS) โ€“ UTILITY VEGETATION MANAGEMENT (UVM)

The Trimmer / Climber supports ArborWorksโ€™ Utility Vegetation Management (UVM) operations by performing vegetation maintenance and line clearance work in proximity to energized electrical systems. This position exists to help ensure public safety, utility system reliability, wildfire risk reduction, and compliance with utility contracts, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.


Working as part of a field crew, the Tree Trimmer / Climber (UVM) performs tree trimming, climbing, rigging, and ground support activities in a variety of environments, including rightsโ€‘ofโ€‘way, roadways, and remote locations. The role requires strict adherence to safety protocols, situational awareness, and quality standards while contributing to efficient daily operations. Tree Trimmer / Climbers collaborate closely with Forepersons, General Forepersons, and fellow crew members to complete work safely, accurately, and in accordance with ArborWorks and utility expectations.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Core Responsibilities (All Levels):

  • Perform vegetation management and tree trimming activities in accordance with utility contracts, safety regulations, and ArborWorks standards.
  • Maintain safe working distances from energized conductors and follow all line clearance procedures.
  • Participate in daily tailboard meetings, job briefings, and safety discussions.
  • Use and maintain tools, equipment, and PPE in a safe and compliant manner.
  • Support crew operations to ensure work is completed efficiently, safely, and to quality standards.
  • Maintain professional conduct with customers, property owners, and the public.


Trimmer I โ€“ Entry Level / Trainee:

  • Assist climbers, trimmers, and bucket operators from the ground.
  • Operate chainsaws, chippers, and hand tools under supervision.
  • Perform brush handling, debris cleanup, and job site organization.
  • Learn climbing techniques, knot tying, rope handling, and rigging fundamentals.
  • Conduct preโ€‘climb tree inspections under supervision.
  • Actively work toward completion of the Line Clearance Qualification Program (LCQP).


Trimmer II โ€“ Intermediate:

  • Perform general tree climbing and trimming duties with limited supervision.
  • Set up climbing systems, tie knots and hitches, and assist with rigging operations.
  • Perform vegetation removal and trimming in proximity to utility lines in accordance with training and qualification level.
  • Assist with traffic control, spotting, and work zone safety.
  • Communicate with customers and assist with postโ€‘work inspections.
  • Continue skill development toward advanced line clearance qualifications.


Trimmer III โ€“ Advanced:

  • Independently perform advanced tree climbing, trimming, and rigging operations.
  • Execute complex line clearance work in accordance with utility and regulatory requirements.
  • Set up job sites, manage work zones, and assist Forepersons with daily job execution.
  • Inspect, maintain, and properly store climbing gear, ropes, saddles, and lifeโ€‘support equipment.
  • Train, mentor, and support Trimmer I and II employees.
  • Successfully complete required skills assessments for advancement.


REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Experience:

  • Trimmer I: Entryโ€‘level; foundational tree or outdoor work experience preferred.
  • Trimmer II: Minimum 6 months of tree climbing and utility vegetation management experience.
  • Trimmer III: Minimum 12 months of utility line clearance experience with demonstrated climbing and rigging proficiency.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to work safely around energized electrical systems.
  • Strong awareness of surroundings and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn, develop skills, and progress within the role.
  • Physical ability to perform climbing, lifting, and outdoor work in varying conditions.
  • Effective communication skills with crew members and supervisors.

Licenses / Certifications:

  • CPR and First Aid Certification (required within 90 days of hire).
  • Valid Driverโ€™s License preferred; must meet company driving requirements if operating vehicles.

Required Training:

  • Groundperson Training (minimum for entry)
  • Line Clearance Qualification Program (LCQP), progressing by level
  • Annual Aerial Rescue Training
  • Tree Feller Training (as applicable)
  • Bucket Operator Training (as applicable)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Line Clearance Qualified Arborist or Line Clearance Qualified Professional (LCQP/LQA).
  • Prior utility vegetation management or arboricultural experience.
  • Experience working in traffic control or roadside rightโ€‘ofโ€‘way environments.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, ANSI Z133, and utility safety standards.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively, including to remote locations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Fieldโ€‘based role performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain.
  • Frequent exposure to trees, vegetation, heavy equipment, traffic corridors, and energized power lines.
  • Regular physical demands including climbing, lifting, standing, walking, bending, and use of chainsaws and hand tools.
  • Travel up to approximately 80%, including overnight assignments and remote job locations.
  • Work schedules may include early mornings, extended hours, weekends, and emergency response as operational needs require.
  • Fastโ€‘paced, safetyโ€‘critical environment requiring constant situational awareness.
