As of Jul 29, 2026, the average hourly pay for tree services in the United States is $24.81, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.43 and $28.12 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some of the typical safety challenges faced by professionals in tree services, and how are they addressed on the job?

Professionals in tree services frequently encounter safety challenges such as working at heights, handling heavy machinery, and dealing with unpredictable weather conditions. To address these risks, teams follow strict safety protocols, wear personal protective equipment (PPE), and use specialized equipment like harnesses and ropes for climbing. Ongoing safety training is also a key part of the role, ensuring that all team members are aware of industry standards and best practices to prevent accidents. Additionally, effective communication within the crew is essential to coordinate tasks safely and efficiently.

How much money can you make trimming trees?

Tree trimming professionals typically earn between $15 and $35 per hour, with annual salaries ranging from $30,000 to $70,000 depending on experience, certifications, and location. Skilled workers who operate specialized equipment and work in hazardous conditions may earn higher wages.

How much do tree techs make?

Tree technicians, or arborists, typically earn between $15 and $30 per hour, with annual salaries ranging from approximately $30,000 to $60,000. Experience, certifications, and the complexity of tasks can influence pay, and many work outdoors with specialized equipment like chainsaws and climbing gear.

What is the difference between Tree Services vs Arborists?

Tree Services encompass a broad range of activities including tree removal, pruning, and stump grinding. Arborists are specialized professionals with certifications focused on tree health, diagnosis, and preservation. While all arborists can perform tree services, not all tree service workers are certified arborists. Choosing between them depends on the complexity of the job and the level of expertise required.

Is tree work a hard job?

Tree work is physically demanding and often involves working at heights, using heavy equipment, and performing strenuous tasks. It requires strength, safety awareness, and sometimes certifications like climbing or aerial rescue training, making it a challenging but essential profession in arboriculture.

How much do tree fellers get paid?

Tree fellers, or arborists and tree removal workers, typically earn between $15 and $30 per hour, depending on experience, location, and certifications. Experienced workers with specialized skills or certifications like OSHA or ISA may earn higher wages, and the job often involves physical labor and the use of chainsaws and safety gear.

What are tree services?

Tree services refer to a range of professional tasks related to the care, maintenance, and removal of trees. These services can include tree trimming, pruning, removal, stump grinding, health assessments, and emergency tree care after storms. Tree service professionals, often called arborists, are trained to ensure the safety, health, and aesthetic value of trees on residential and commercial properties. Hiring a certified tree service can help prevent property damage and promote the long-term well-being of your landscape.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Tree Services, and why are they important?

To thrive in Tree Services, you need knowledge of arboriculture, safe tree pruning and removal techniques, and often a high school diploma or relevant certification. Familiarity with chainsaws, chippers, climbing equipment, and sometimes specialized certifications like ISA Certified Arborist are typically required. Physical stamina, strong problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills make someone stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring safety, efficiency, and high-quality service in potentially hazardous and physically demanding environments.

Job description

Tree Crew Leader (Climber)

Cincinnati, OH | Residential Tree Care | Year-Round Work

Tired of inconsistent work, outdated equipment, or chaotic jobs?
This is a growing, well-run residential tree operation where you’ll have the tools, team, and support to do your job the right way — every day.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out

  • Year-round, consistent work (no layoffs, no slow seasons)
  • Brand new 72’ track lift + strong equipment lineup
  • Residential work only (no utility line clearance / storm chasing)
  • 40–50 hours/week (overtime paid after 40)
  • Stable company with ~95% retention
  • Clear path to:
    • Arborist role
    • Plant Health Care
    • Future leadership / PM track

The Role

You’ll lead a small, tight-knit crew (2–3 people) handling residential tree work across the Cincinnati area.

This is a hands-on leadership role — you’ll be climbing, operating equipment, and running jobs day-to-day.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Climbing trees (when lift access isn’t possible)
  • Operating lift, chipper, and truck/trailer
  • Leading and directing crew members
  • Ensuring safe, efficient job execution
  • Managing cleanup and production flow
  • Logging job details via mobile apps (LMN / Microsoft tools)

Equipment & Work Environment

  • Brand new 72’ track lift
  • Crane access when needed
  • Well-maintained trucks and equipment
  • Jobs within ~1 hour radius
  • Mix of:
    • Half-day jobs
    • Multi-day removals (up to 2–3 days)

What We’re Looking For

Must-Have:

  • Tree climbing experience
  • Ability to lead or step into a leadership role
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to drive:
    • F350 truck
    • Trailer + chipper

Nice to Have:

  • CDL (or willingness to get one)
  • Strong rigging / removal experience
  • Residential tree care background

Open To:

  • Solid climbers ready to step into leadership
  • Crew leaders looking for a better long-term home

Compensation & Benefits

  • 40–50 hours/week
  • Overtime: 1.5x after 40 hours
  • Health, Dental, Vision
  • 2 weeks PTO
  • Paid holidays
  • Consistent schedule:
    • Start: 7:00–7:30 AM
    • End: ~4:00–5:00 PM

Location Flexibility

  • Work based out of either location:
    • West Side (main office)
    • East Side (satellite office)
  • 70% of work is on the East Side
  • Company is flexible depending on where you live

Growth Opportunity

You’ll have the opportunity to grow into:

  • Plant Health Care
  • Arborist role
  • Project / Operations leadership

What Makes This Company Different

  • Promotes from within (current foreman developed internally)
  • Invests in people — willing to train the right person
  • Low turnover (people stay here)
  • Organized, professional operation (not a “fly-by-night” tree crew)
    Important Notes
  • Clean driving record is important
  • Background issues considered case-by-case (older issues OK)
  • This is not a storm-chasing or utility line clearance role

Apply If You’re:

  • A climber ready to lead
  • A crew leader looking for stability
  • Tired of inconsistent work or poor management
  • Looking for a long-term home with growth
