Tree Salesman information

What is a tree salesman?

Tree salesmen are professionals who specialize in selling trees and related landscaping plants to customers such as homeowners, landscapers, and businesses. They typically work at nurseries, garden centers, or wholesale tree farms, providing advice on tree species, planting, and care. Tree salesmen help clients select the right trees for their specific needs, considering factors like climate, soil, and landscape goals. Their knowledge ensures that customers choose healthy trees that will thrive in their intended environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tree salesman?

To thrive as a Tree Salesman, you need a strong understanding of horticulture, plant identification, and sales techniques, often supported by experience in nursery or landscaping environments. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, inventory management software, and possibly certifications in horticulture or arboriculture are beneficial. Exceptional communication, customer service, and relationship-building skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for effectively advising customers, closing sales, and ensuring repeat business in a competitive market.

What are some common challenges a tree salesman might face when working with landscaping clients?

A Tree Salesman often encounters challenges such as educating clients about the best tree species for their specific environment, managing client expectations regarding tree growth and maintenance, and coordinating delivery and planting logistics. Additionally, balancing inventory with seasonal demand and ensuring that trees are healthy and well-cared for before sale can be demanding. Effective communication and strong product knowledge are essential for addressing client concerns and building long-term relationships within the landscaping industry.

Job description

The Opportunity

Kapsons is partnering with a Fortune 1000 industry leader and one of the largest providers of commercial landscaping and tree care services in the United States to hire an experienced Tree Care Business Developer.

This is a field-based B2B sales position responsible for developing and closing commercial tree care opportunities within an assigned territory. The Business Developer will own the full sales cycle—from prospecting and estimating through proposal development, contract negotiation, and close.

The ideal candidate brings a combination of tree care industry knowledge, arboriculture expertise, and proven B2B sales ability. We are looking for a self-motivated professional who can develop new relationships while also partnering with existing landscape account teams to identify additional tree care opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sell and estimate commercial tree care services throughout an assigned regional territory.
  • Develop new business through proactive prospecting, networking, referrals, and targeted account development.
  • Manage the complete tree care sales pipeline from initial prospecting through contract negotiation and close.
  • Utilize consultative and solution-based selling techniques to understand customer needs and recommend appropriate tree care solutions.
  • Partner with Landscape Maintenance Account Managers and branch leadership to develop tree care programs, recommendations, and estimates for existing customers.
  • Conduct phone prospecting, face-to-face customer meetings, sales presentations, and virtual presentations.
  • Develop accurate estimates, proposals, pricing, and recommendations for prospective customers.
  • Build relationships with property managers, facility managers, HOAs, commercial property owners, and other key decision-makers and influencers.
  • Network within the local market to develop new commercial tree care accounts and expand relationships within targeted customer segments.
  • Identify opportunities to increase tree care penetration within existing commercial landscape accounts.
  • Build and maintain long-term, trust-based relationships with key decision-makers.
  • Collaborate with operations, finance, marketing, proposal administration, and other internal teams on larger opportunities and competitive bids.
  • Consistently achieve established tree care revenue and sales targets.
  • Maintain an active sales pipeline and accurately forecast opportunities and expected results.
  • Consistently document sales activities, customer interactions, and opportunities within Salesforce CRM.
  • Establish daily prospecting and activity goals and maintain the discipline necessary to consistently achieve them.
  • Work independently in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment with a strong sense of urgency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • 5+ years of successful B2B sales experience, preferably involving commercial tree care, arboriculture, landscaping, or related services.
  • Strong knowledge of tree care, arboriculture, plant health, and/or commercial tree services.
  • Relevant tree care industry credentials are strongly preferred, including:
    • ISA Certified Arborist
    • TCIA certifications or credentials
    • Other relevant arboriculture or tree care certifications
  • Demonstrated experience selling to mid- and senior-level decision-makers.
  • Proven track record of achieving or exceeding sales goals.
  • Experience working within a longer-cycle, consultative B2B sales environment.
  • Commercial contract sales experience within the service industry is highly desirable.
  • Ability to identify customer needs and develop value-based tree care solutions.
  • Experience developing estimates, pricing, proposals, and recommendations for tree care services.
  • Ability to manage multiple opportunities and customer relationships across a large geographic territory.
  • Strong local market knowledge and established industry relationships are preferred.
  • Experience with CRM or sales force automation platforms; Salesforce experience is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent presentation, negotiation, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly competitive, positive, self-motivated, and results-driven.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with operations and other internal teams.

Ideal Candidate

We are particularly interested in candidates who have worked as a:

Physical Demands & Requirements

  • Regular operation of computers and other office and sales equipment, including laptops, mobile phones, and sales software/tools.
  • The position involves a combination of mobile and sedentary work and requires the ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods.
  • The role regularly requires spending more than half of the working time away from company locations, meeting prospective customers, visiting properties, selling services, and obtaining orders or contracts.
  • Ability to travel by car, train, and plane as required.
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain and walk jobsites with customers and branch teams for periods of up to four hours.

Work Environment

This is a field-based position combining office responsibilities, customer-facing activities, prospecting, networking, and regular jobsite visits.

  • Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments.
