Job description

JOB TITLE: AerialLift Operator

DEPARTMENT: Departmentof Public Works

LOCATION: Landsand Natural Resources

FLSA STATUS: HourlyNon-Exempt - Full time - Benefit Eligible

POSITION GRADE: Grade7

RATE RANGE: $28.54-$37.02 per hour in eight steps

SCHEDULE: 40 hours per week, in addition participates intown-wide snow and ice removal operations, required.

1.ย  Nature of Work:ย Performs skilled work within the Lands and Natural Resources Department.Assists the Supervising Foreman/Aerial Lift Operator and in his/her absenceassumes responsibility for the Lands and Natural Resources function.ย Makes frequent contact with co-workers and residents requiring calm, clear andcourteous communication.

2.ย  Supervision Received:ย  Works under the supervision of the Supervising Foreman/Aerial Lift Operator whoassigns work, reviews performance for skill and efficiency, and assists incases of difficulty.

3.ย  SupervisoryResponsibility:ย  May provide supervision to others in performance of tasksas assigned.ย ย 

4.ย  Confidentiality:ย Employee has regular access to confidential information of thedepartment.ย  Confidentiality must be maintained with regard to thisinformation in accordance with Department Policy and the Public Records Act.

5.ย  Accountability:ย Consequences or errors, missed deadlines or poor judgment may include adversepublic relations, monetary loss, legal repercussions, labor/material costs,personal injury, jeopardize programs, and danger to public health/safety.

6.ย  Judgment:ย  Guidelinesmay be given verbally, or through administrative or organizational policies, ordirectives.ย  Employee is expected to weigh efficiency and relativepriorities in performing tasks.

7.ย  Complexity:ย  The workconsists of the practical application of a variety of concepts, practices andspecialized techniques relating to custodial and maintenance work.

8.ย  Nature and Purpose of PublicContact:ย  Employee interacts frequently with Town employees and thepublic.ย  Customer service skills are required involving courtesy, tact,and diplomacy.

9.ย  Essential Functions:ย The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only asillustrations of the various type of work that may be performed.ย  Theomission of specific statement of duties does not exclude them from the positionif the work is similar, related, or logical assignment to the position.

1. Uses extensive knowledge and skillin the operation of trucks, earth-moving equipment, and automobiles used in thevarious divisional work assignments.

2. Suggests modification to equipmentfor more efficient operation.

3. Removes and prunes trees, chipsdebris and performs tasks related to the care and maintenance of Town ownedlands.ย 

4. Performs routine tasks inconnection with care, upkeep, repair, marking and beautification ofconservation land, highway and roads, such as but not limited to using andoperating landscaping equipment and power tools, cutting grass, weeds andbrush; cleaning culverts, catch basins, drains and ditches; loading andunloading trucks and cars; spreading sand, gravel and asphalt.

5. Operates aerial lift truck mountedequipment to facilitate access to high areas.ย 

6. Directs subordinate employees inthe performance of tasks ensuring work is performed safely and efficiently.

7. Prepares and maintain operationaland administrative reports as necessary.

8. Accept deliveries of supplies andequipment.

9. Trains new employees in performingassigned duties.

10. Assists with grounds maintenancework at all facilities including mowing, string trimming, chain sawing, leafand brush removal.ย 

11. Participates in operation andordinary maintenance of equipment, instructs employees in the correct andproper usage and keeps daily records of maintenance completed.

12. Manually climbs when equipment isinadequate.

13. Performs similar tasks asassigned, including functions of those in a lower classification.

14. Cross trains with other Departmentemployees.

15. Is available for overtime and callbacks in the event of emergencies.

16. Participates in town-wide snow andice removal operations.

10.ย  Recommended MinimumQualification

ย Must have a high school diploma orequivalent, three years of full time work experience and considerable,demonstrable knowledge and skill relative to practices, methods, and proceduresregarding safety devices and equipment, such as chain saws, chippers and otherrelated equipment.ย  Must have extensive tree and natural resourcesknowledge, physical ability, agility, tree climbing, rope use, chain saw, inthe tree and proper harness skills as well as prior and demonstrable ability tosupervise and motivate other employees, deal effectively with fellow employees,supervisors and the general public or any equivalent combination of education,training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, andabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Special Requirements:ย  Mustpossess valid Massachusetts Driver's and CDL Class B licenses. Hydraulics 2Blicense and climbing and aerial lift certification preferred.

11.ย  Knowledge, Abilities andSkill:

1. Knowledge of the laws, rules,regulations pertaining to tree and grounds care/operations.

2. Considerable and demonstrableskill, including those required of subordinate employees, in the use of toolsand the operation of equipment required in the performance of tree and groundscare/work.

3. Ability to deal appropriately andharmoniously with public officials, the general public, supervisors andco-workers.

12.ย  Work Environment:ย  Thenature of duties may involve continuous presence of unpleasant or irritatingelements, such as noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil,dirt, or grease.ย  Work is performed indoors and outdoors during inclementweather.

13.ย  Occupational Risks:ย Duties regularly present potential risks of injuries from improper exposurethat could result in loss of time from work.ย  Examples of injuries includemuscular strains and falls from heights in excess of three (3) feet.ย Special safety precautions, training, or protective clothing such as chaps,gloves, glasses, hats, helmets or boots will be required/provided.

14.ย  Physical and MentalRequirements:ย  The physical demands described here are representative ofthose that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essentialfunction of this job.ย  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enableindividuals with disabilities to perform the positions essential functions.

Physical Demands:ย  Work requiresregular physical strength and effort daily, such as, lifting/dragging heavyobjects up to 50 lbs. (or more in cases of emergency), carrying objects andstacking them.ย  In addition, pulling, pushing, standing, or walking forthe full workday may be involved.

15.ย  Motor Skills:ย  Dutiesinvolve close hand and eye coordination and physical dexterity.ย Manipulation and motor control may require extreme accuracy.



16.ย  Visual Demands:ย  Visualdemands include reading documents for general understanding, routinelyreviewing non-written materials such as machinery and the need for colorvision.
