Job description

Why You'll Love Being a Brownswood Team Member:

You are a practical, hands-on problem-solver who enjoys repairing, building, and keeping a busy property running smoothly. In this part-time role, you will support general maintenance and improvement projects across Brownswood's campus. Each day may bring a different challenge, from repairing a gate or tree line to completing basic wiring, woodworking, property upkeep, or light technology support.

Brownswood Nursery is Charleston's largest nursery and design-build firm. We offer a complete line of services from growing to landscape design and installation to maintenance. We have been inspiring people to grow since 1978 and strongly believe in investing in the professional growth of each member of our team. This role is ideal for a dependable handyman who values variety, teamwork, and practical problem-solving.

What We Offer:

  • A flexible part-time schedule of approximately 20 hours per week
  • A supportive, fast-paced, and team-oriented work environment
  • Training and certification opportunities (i.e. SC CNP, SC CLP)
  • Employee discount
  • Opportunities to expand skills and responsibilities

What You Will Do:

  • Complete general handyman, repair, and maintenance projects throughout the nursery
  • Perform basic carpentry, including repairs to gates, fencing, shelving, work areas, and other property features
  • Assist with basic electrical and wiring tasks within your experience, such as replacing fixtures, organizing cables, and supporting equipment installations
  • Repair and maintain tree lines, greenhouse components, shade cloth, doors, fixtures, and other facility or property features
  • Handle minor plumbing, painting, hardware installation, and general facility upkeep
  • Provide light IT support, including basic hardware setup, cable organization, mounting equipment, and physical installations
  • Assist with irrigation troubleshooting, groundskeeping, storm and freeze preparation, severe-weather response, and cleanup
  • Perform basic maintenance and minor repairs on golf carts, utility vehicles, tools, and landscaping equipment as needed
  • Assist with limited small-engine troubleshooting and routine equipment maintenance when within your experience
  • Maintain simple service records, organize tools and supplies, keep work areas clean and safe, and communicate repair priorities to the Facilities Manager

What We Are Looking For:

  • A dependable, self-starting individual with practical handyman skills and strong problem-solving ability
  • Experience in facilities maintenance, construction, carpentry, property maintenance, landscaping, or a related trade preferred, but not required
  • Working knowledge of hand and power tools, woodworking, basic electrical and wiring, plumbing, irrigation, or general property repair
  • Comfort providing light IT and equipment support and learning unfamiliar systems when needed
  • A safety-minded approach and the ability to work independently while supporting multiple departments
  • Strong organization, communication, follow-through, and attention to detail
  • Ability to work outdoors in changing weather and lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • A valid driver's license and acceptable driving record preferred
  • Honesty, diligence, flexibility, and a strong work ethic
