Job description

A tree groundsman primarily works on the ground to support arborists and tree climbers, focusing on safety, equipment operation, and site cleanup. This physically demanding role is essential for efficient and safe tree care and removal operations.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Worksite Management amp; Safety:
    • Set up work zones and implement traffic control procedures.
    • Scan the area for potential hazards (e.g., trip and fall hazards) and ensure all safety procedures are followed.
    • Assist climbers with rigging, lowering limbs, and handling ropes and equipment.
  • Equipment Operation amp; Maintenance:
    • Operate and maintain a variety of tools and machinery, including chainsaws, wood chippers, stump grinders, and various hand tools.
    • Unload, prepare, and stow materials and equipment at the beginning and end of each job.
    • Perform routine maintenance on company vehicles and tools.
  • Debris Handling amp; Cleanup:
    • Gather and feed brush, branches, and debris into a wood chipper.
    • Haul wood and other waste materials from the tree to the truck for disposal.
    • Clean job sites thoroughly to maintain a professional appearance and safe environment.
  • General Tree amp; Ground Care (as needed):
    • Perform basic tree and shrub maintenance, such as pruning, watering, and fertilizing.
    • Monitor plant health and report any issues to the crew leader or arborist.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Physical Stamina: The role requires significant physical strength to handle heavy lifting (up to 50-75 lbs), prolonged periods of standing and walking, bending, kneeling, and working in all types of weather conditions.
